The ice is out and Tax Day has passed.  Maybe summer will finally show up.

CLYC REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS MAY 15TH……..We have gotten some early registrations, but most of the rest of us have only 27 days to get our Yacht Club registrations in.  Most will register online by visiting the CLYC Web Site (www.clyciowa.com), but I have also attached a registration form to this newsletter for those who like to mess with paper forms, write checks, and lick stamps.

YACHT CLUB SPRING SPRUCEUP…………is Saturday, May 4 at the Yacht Club (duh).  The annual spring cleanup starts at 9:00 a.m.  No prior experience is necessary and we provide most of the supplies. Those of you who like to garden might want to bring some basic gardening tools.  Not only is this a nice opportunity to help get the building and grounds ship shape for summer, but it’s also a good way to reconnect with folks you might not have seen for the past 8 or 9 months.

WE USED TO CALL IT THE SAILING SCHOOL……….but it’s name has changed.  The former CLYC Sailing School is now the Clear Lake Sailing Center, or CLSC for short. Nothing else has changed, but if you’re like me, it will take some time to stop calling it the Sailing School.  While you’re working on your Yacht Club registration it’s probably a good time to do your Sailing Center registration, too. You can do so by visiting www.clycss.com.

EARTH DAY………..is right around the corner, and there are some lake related events that are part of the program.
There will be a CLYC/CLSC booth at the Earth Day Green Expoon Thursday, April 26 from 4-7 pm at the Surf.  If you are interested in being an ambassador at the booth, you can contact our new Commodore, Deb Tesar (dtesar@cltel.net) and let her know. You can also check out this link: http://earthdayclearlake.org/events/green-expo/.
Dave Thoreson, who many of us know as an Okoboji MC sailor, also leads a double life as a sailing explorer and photographer documenting climate change around the world. Dave has written books and given talks about his explorations for several years now.  And he will be speaking on Tuesday, April 23, at E.B. Stillman Auditorium at 6:30 pm………the topic is “Eyewitness to Climate Change: Melting Ice, Rising Seas and Iowa’s Water Crisis”……….see the brochure attached to this newsletter for more details. And you can visit this link: http://earthdayclearlake.org/david-thoreson-program/.

RACE COMMITTEE CERTIFICATION COURSE…………..If learning the basics of weekend race committee work sounds interesting to you, or you just need to update your Club Officer certificate, then US Sailing’s certification course is for you.  It’s Saturday, May 11  from 9:00 – 5:00 in the Lakeview Room at the bandshell, across the street from the Yacht Club building.  $45 will get you registered, including course materials, online testing, breakfast and lunch. Contact Charlie MacNider for additional information or go to USSailing.org to register.

AND HERE IS THE ALL IMPORTANT SUMMER PARTY SCHEDULE……..
June 1:           CLYC Clubhouse (Social Members)
June 22:         Steve and Sue Taylor  (X Parents, Cs, Es)
July 27:           Tom and Denni Sue Erickson  (Board Members)
Aug. 10:          Ken and Paula Hanus  (MCs, M17s and Hobies)

LATE BREAKING NEWS………….Our crack investigative reporting crew has learned that one of our own, Stuart Oltrogge, will be speaking at the inaugural “Art of the Story” event at the Clear Lake Arts Center on Saturday, April 27. This is the first of a three part series sponsored by the Clear Lake Arts Center and Central Gardens of North Iowa. The topic is “Roads Less Traveled: Stories of Daring, Adventure and Surprise.”  Stu will be joined by four others who will recite their tales of intrigue or daring.  (Editor’s Note:  Let’s hope that Stu’s harrowing experience is not about the one time I nearly beat him on the race course last summer……..)Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.  See the brochure I’ve attached to this newsletter for more details.
Club racing starts in about 5 weeks, so get on it………..

Later, Oz
