July 9, 2020

So much for a boring 4th of July weekend!  If you didn’t catch the boat parade you really missed out.   The boat made out like a bathtub was phenomenal, good job to that crew!  A huge thank you to Andi Tisor and Clear Lake Boats for putting it together, hopefully that becomes a new Clear Lake tradition.  The fireworks display put on by several homeowners on the East and South shores were amazing, I hope everyone involved still has all their fingers, eyebrows and at least some of their hearing left!  While it may have been a little different this year, it seems as though everyone made the best of what we had available and all had a great time!

The most important component to the future of our club is the youth…  On June 29th and 30th the Sailing Center hosted the “West Water Clinic,” which is a training event for the X fleet. It’s designed to help with racing skill development, bring further camaraderie to each team and ultimately to be fun and make new friends.  It couldn’t have gone better!  The 17 boats from 3 lakes had a total of 9 races in good breezes, learned bunches and the organizers got rave reviews.  Such rave reviews in fact; next year’s event is tentatively on the schedule for June 28-29, 2021.  Congratulations and thank you to the organizers of the event, especially Rebecca Nyhus who took the lead and came through in fantastic fashion!

Speaking of the youth… They get to take a back seat, well forward seat, this Sunday during the annual Russ Schurtz Memorial Dad/Ladd Mom/Lass race.  That’s Sunday July 12that 2pm.  Parents get ready to show off your lack of skills in an X boat; and kids, be ready to ridicule them for that lack of skill…

The next yacht club party will be held July 18th at the Club in downtown Clear Lake.  The format will remain the same as the previous party; please don’t bring any food to share, options will be available from a vendor on site; however, that vendor has yet to be chosen. Beer, wine and soft drinks will be provided.  No hard liquor is allowed on the premises.  More details to come.

On to the sailing… Hmmm… We’re scheduled to race this weekend at our normal times… If someone has an in with Mother Nature, please do your best to put her in a better mood……….

If you haven’t heard all of the ILYA regattas have been cancelled for the year with the exception of the X Inland and Optimist Inland Championships.   The X Inland will be held this year at Pewaukee Yacht Club with the Senior Fleet commencing on July 27th and ending on the 29th.  Then the Junior Fleet takes over from July 30th – August 1st.  The Opti Championship will be held virtually next door at Pine Lake Yacht Club on August 3rd and 4th.

The Clear Lake Yacht Club is still scheduled to host the MCSA Masters Nationals from September 17th – 20th.  The volunteer chairs are in place and each will be reaching out for help.  The traditional sailing season in the Midwest is over by this time and in most places it could be troublesome to find volunteers……..  Not in Clear Lake though, right!?!?!?!  Help Regatta Co-Chairs Mark Tesar and Stu Oltrogge put on a great event and showcase Clear Lake to sailing world yet again!

Wednesday night continues to be a fun evening for the MC’s!  They get in a handful of practice races, get to help slower less in tune sailors (like me) get up to speed and just have a great time on the water.  If you would like to join us and see what these great boats are all about, give one of us a call or drop someone an email.  We can find a boat for you to use!

Stay in the clear air,

Dan Allen
