Tha…..tha….that’s all folks! Well, almost all.
After a weekend with lots of racing…….from the annual Laser Regatta
(our annual showcase of the doldrums) to the Cougar Worlds (isn’t it
Intergalactics by now?) to a full slate of 3 races for the rest of us, it’s
time to start winding down in a big way. And that means:
LABOR DAY REGATTA………look
for back-to-back races on Saturday with a final race on Sunday.
END-OF-SEASON BANQUET……..Sunday,
September 1, 5:30 p.m. at (politically corrected) Camp Tanglefoot.
All you have to bring is your checkbook, because there’s a very
nominal charge for some great food ordered up by the outgoing Commodore.
FINAL BOARD MEETING………of
the season is Saturday morning, August 31, at 8:00 a.m. CDT.
Just remember, folks in New York have already been at it for an hour by
then. I’m told it shouldn’t
last more than an hour.
E FLEET PARTY REMINDER……..it’s
at MacNiders this Saturday, August 31, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Don’t bring anything but yourselves.
Make sure you RSVP.
BRING BACK YOUR TRAVELING
TROPHIES…….if you haven’t already.
Jeff Nicholas would really like to have something to hand out to some
of you deserving souls.
COUGAR REGATTA…..That’s
more Cougars than I’ve seen at the starting line in quite a while.
Sorry, I don’t have the results,
but I’m sure you guys have already sorted it all out………probably
over champagne last Saturday night…….
I’m out of info……..and ink.

Thar
she blows…..and blows……and blows.
Can any of you remember a storm at Clear Lake like the one last Friday
night? When was the last time the
wind blew 50 knots for 3 or 4 hours? Come
to think of it, when was the last time anyone stayed up most of the night
making sure your and your neighbor’s stuff didn’t end up out on the
railroad tracks? The north shore took the brunt of it….and the proof was on
the beaches and up against the seawalls on Saturday morning (when the wind had
dropped to 25 knots)…..jet skis, small sailboats, canopies, and pieces of
docks and lifts were everywhere. I
haven’t heard of any major damage; but that’s small consolation to those
of you who had to collect boats and dock up and down the shoreline.
From
the sailors’
perspective, it would seem Mother Nature needs a new wind fan.
The one she’s using apparently only runs on “high” and “off”.
The result: no races Saturday or Sunday.
REVISED
RACING SCHEDULE THIS WEEKEND……..Hopefully
you have already noticed on the calendar we sent out early this season, or on
the Web Site schedule, that, because of the Laser Regatta this weekend, all of
us will race together at 9:30 a.m. this Saturday morning and at 1:30 p.m. on
Sunday.
LASER
REGATTA…….is
this weekend. And I understand
they will be racing when we aren’t…….i.e. Saturday afternoon and Sunday
morning. If we can generate some
decent breezes, those Lasers should be fun to watch.
LAST
WEEK’S YC PARTY AT STEVE AND SUE TAYLOR’S………..went
very well. Thanks to Taylors for
allowing 75 or so Yacht Club members to trespass on their property and thanks
to those who brought solid food and who helped serve liquid food.
MC
FLEET PARTY……is
this Saturday, Aug. 24, 6:30 p.m. at the Yacht Club, according to Fleet
Captain Randy Kotz. Meat and
beverages will be provided. But
you should bring a side dish to pass around…..and bring something to eat
with.
COUGAR
REGATTA AND CHAMPAGNE PARTY…..Andi
Ludwig tells me the Cougars already have all the regatta info for their event
this weekend, but wanted to remind folks of the champagne party at
“rusticove” on Saturday, Aug. 24th.
E
FLEET PARTY……..Not
to be outdone, Charlie and Kathy MacNider are hosting the E Fleet Party on
Saturday, Aug. 31 at their place at 6:30 p.m. sharp.
You don’t need to bring anything………BUT you do need to RSVP
ahead of time (call 357-2036 and ask for the boss…..then tell her what your
intentions are).
THE
SEASON IS STARTING TO WIND DOWN…..so a couple of reminders.
1.
The year-end banquet will be Sunday, Sept. 1
starting at 5:30 p.m. at Camp Tanglefoot.
2.
Scrounge up any traveling trophies you may have
and get them to Jeff Nicholas so he can redistribute them to this winter’s
rightful owners.
3.
Get your Interlakes fees in to Rick Fitch.
I think he’s emailed all of us who are still delinquent. (no interest
accrues on late payments…..but you don’t get any hardware at the banquet,
if you remain a deadbeat)
THE
2ND ANNUAL BLOOPER AWARD PRESENTATION………will
be held at this year’s banquet. You
are all invited to submit candidates for the award along with the story of why
they should be included. The
stories (1) have to be from this season, and (2) have to be true (although a
little embellishment is absolutely expected).
And if there’s something you’ve just got to get off your chest
because your own stupidity has been really bugging you, feel free to practice
a little therapy……face your demons…..and nominate yourself.
Commodore Stu Oltrogge is compiling a list, so make sure you email him
at oltrogge@clyciowa.com.
ILYA
CHAMPIONSHIPS REPORT……Clear
Lake’s sole participant in this year’s Championships at Oshkosh, Wisconsin
was Bill Nicholas. He and crew
Mark Tesar pulled off a 5th place in the first race in typical
Clear Lake sailor style. Apparently
it blew like all get-out that race, and boats littered the race course…….
5th place is a fine reward for surviving any demolition derby.
If only it would have stayed that windy for the next 3 races…..Bill
might have walked away with the regatta.

Not
much going on this week, so the newsletter will be short.
LAST
PARTY OF THE SUMMER……is at Steve and Sue Taylors’
Oakwood residence on Saturday, August 17 with the customary 6:30 p.m. starting
gun. MCs, Es, Hobies and Past
Commodores have hors d’oeuvres and beverage serving honors.
LASER
REGATTA……Just a reminder that the Laser Regatta we have
hosted for the past several years is scheduled for the weekend of August 24.

Congratulations………you
all did it once again. Another
bang-up regatta performance for the Clear Lake Yacht Club !!
The only less-than-stellar performance was Mother Nature’s feeble
attempts at generating winds on Friday and Sunday (however, she more than made
up for it with some classic Clear Lake breezes out of the south (believe it or
not) on Saturday.
As far as results go, the MC team
took home the fleet trophy for the 4th time in a row, and 5th
time in the last 6 years……..with all 5 team members finishing in the top 10
of the 30 boat feet. And the E
team, in a 13 boat fleet, finished on top for the first time in a long time.
Individually, Stu Oltrogge and Eric
Protzman slugged it out in the MC races, with Stu edging Eric by just 1
point for first-place honors. And
Bill Nicholas sailed his way to a strong 2nd in the 31 boat C-Fleet,
just 5 points behind Jason Ostbye of Minnetonka.
Tom Erickson pulled off 4th individually. And our X boats finished respectably, with Chris Oz and Chase
Langhart in the middle of the pack (Chase was actually in the lead for a good
share of the last race on Sunday morning, which was mercifully called off for
lack of wind………..and so everyone would have time to make it to church).
Joann Nicholas and Margaret Oz co-chaired yet another
outstanding regatta and had this to say:
“We want to thank everyone who
helped and participated in the 108th Interlake Regatta.
We received many, many compliments on the new building and on our
Club’s hospitality. Core group
planner – Mary Risewick, Julie Oltrogge, Barb Nicholas, Rick and Mary Lou
Fitch and Val LaFrenz at registration. Linda
Nerdig, who managed T-Shirts.
Nancy and Tom Lundeen donated cookie dough for our welcome
(ed. Note: have any of you ever
been to a regatta where they serve up home-made cookies during registration??).
Dick Casey and his crew of tax and spectator boats….and I don’t think
anyone put in more time out there than elder statesman, Bill Oz.
Dave and Patti Theiss made T-Shirts just as fast as we could sell them.
The Clear Lake Chamber for bag stuffing and the City of Clear Lake for
providing picnic tables, some “brand spankin’ new” public restroom
facilities, road barricades, etc. Jimmy Hall, also reprised his role as our night watchman.
Breakfasts: Marilyn Broghammer, Jan Price and Carol Wilcox
Lunches: Fran Oz, Nancy Barnes, Billie Hanes, Lori Zachar, and Nancy Zanios.
On-shore coordinators for the afternoons:
Mary Lou Nicholas, Mary Curtis and Elizabeth Ray.
Dinner on Friday evening at Docks was great thanks to Roger and Kari.
The Saturday evening dinner/parties:
E’s hosted by Kathy and Charlie MacNider, and Tom and Denni Erickson.
For the X’s our thanks to the Langharts, the Andersons and the Isaaks
who braved the Fort Custer Maze with a gaggle of youngsters.
The MCs hosted by the Protzmans, Schurtzes and Jeffreys at the Outing
Club, as well as the rest of the Outing Club members who allowed us to invade
their space for an evening. For the
C’s, it was Bill and Barb Nicholas and Steve and Sheila Swift doing the party
honors at Nicholas’ home.
The judging crew again had to make decisions under some
trying conditions and performed admirably, as is their custom.
Headed by PRO Craig Caslavka, wife Reece and daughter Pam, and John
Toepfer. Boat 2 – Chris Wessels
and Gil Bovard. Boat 4 – John
Hanson and Roger Bang. Over on the
X course Phil Peterson from Okoboji and Brad Robinson from Minnetonka led the
judging charge with Boat 2 – Russ and Ann Schurtz and Boat 4 – Dave Curtis
and Bud Toepfer assisting. I know
that new Yacht Club member Chandler Cayot got in on the judging action, too.
Thanks much to the many of you who invited sailors and
their crews to stay at your homes. Ken and Susan Tartar of the Chapin Company
for the crew trophy gloves. Emily
Oltrogge for coloring all the maps. Mark
Tesar for his instantaneous and accurate scoring coupled with his building
duties. Lastly a big thanks to Tom
Weigel, king of the Interlake Regatta for organizing and maintaining this event
year after year.
I’m sure we missed some who deserve
to be recognized…….we are sorry if we did…….it’s not
intentional. It’s just that
we’re really tired right now. It’s really the entire Clear Lake Yacht Club “team”
that is to be thanked. Thanks
again, Margaret Oz and Joann Nicholas.”
LAST PARTY OF THE SUMMER……is
at Steve and Sue Taylors’ Oakwood residence on Saturday, August 17 with the
customary 6:30 p.m. starting gun. MCs,
Es, Hobies and Past Commodores have hors d’oeuvres and beverage serving
honors.

INTERLAKE REGATTA IS THIS WEEKEND…..and
we’re the hosts. A couple of requests and reminders before we get into all the
fun stuff planned for the weekend.
Anyone with a motorboat can be a taxi or spectator boat or both. And with well over 100 boats attending, believe me, we are
grateful for any help we can get. Most
of the off-lake boats will be showing up on Thursday to register and put in, and
they will need help mooring their boats out in front of City Beach.
On Friday the first race hour guns will be at 9:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.,
and taxis and spectator boats will really be in demand then.
Those races end right before noon, with afternoon races usually getting
underway around 1:00. Saturday
should be roughly the same schedule; Sunday is scheduled for only one race in
the morning. Call Dick Casey at
357-6627, so he can be sure we have enough committed help.
Even if you haven’t officially signed up, please stop by any boats who
look like they might need assistance, and also check City Dock for spectators
who may want to go out and watch. And
thanks for helping out !!!
IF YOU WANT TICKETS TO ANY EVENTS OR YOU
WANT T-SHIRTS…… you must, must, must sign up and purchase
those things at registration. Any
Yacht Club member is welcome to buy tickets to attend the events or to snag a
cool t-shirt. But, just so you
know, registration is all Thursday afternoon , so you don’t have an excuse for
not buying what you need when it’s available. Please don’t just call the building or show up at the
events looking for a ticket or a shirt. It’s
hard enough for our volunteer help to keep track of what’s going on, without
someone looking for a last minute entry.
THE ALL IMPORTANT SCHEDULE OF PARTIES…………………..
Saturday
(each fleet gets to celebrate with their own fleet brethren at their
own separate locations)
--
All X-Fleet participants (and interested parties) hit the Yacht Club
building at 6:30 p.m. for sub sandwiches and a trip to the Fort Custer Maze, all
for $10.00.
-- All MC-Fleet participants (and hangers on) arrive at the south
end, lower parking lot of the Outing Club at 6:30 p.m. for marinated pork
loin, breads, assorted salads and veggies, and dessert bars, for a
miserly $15.00
-- All C-Fleet participants (and onlookers) hoof it to Bill and Barb
Nicholas’ home, 1111 North Shore Drive, at 6:30 p.m. to enjoy the same menu as the MCs will be enjoying for (believe it or not) the same
price.
-- All E-Fleet participants (and M-16 and 420s, if those fleets end up
participating in this regatta) can
enjoy the same menu (yes, yes….the same
price) at Charlie and Kathy MacNider’s at 6:30 p.m.
UH, OH……..SERIOUS INTERLAKE
STUFF……..Team members and alternates get the privilege of paying the
following fees as soon as possible to the CLYC Secy./Treasurer (either in person
or by mail to PO Box 29, Clear Lake, IA 50428).
X:
$55
MC:
$60
C:
$70
E:
$90
If you don’t remember our motto about what happens if you
don’t pay, I will remind you in upcoming issues of this rag.
URGENT REQUEST……Elle
Schurtz wants to know if anyone is planning on traveling to the WMYA MC regatta
at Lake Cadillac, Michigan, Aug. 7-10. If
so, she would love to hitch a ride, if at all possible, so she can crew with E.
Hood. If you are going or know
someone who might be you can reach Elle at sschurtz3@mchsi.com, or 641-424-9777
(home), or 641-430-4981 (cell).
Here’s to another great regatta
weekend, put on by the Yacht Club that does it the best !!!

Some of us perspire……..others
of us sweat. Last weekend I believe
we all did a lot of both. Now you
know why most of us would have a hard time living in the Bahamas all year round.
On the other hand, if you had to pick a spot to be, the lake was the
place to be……….in, not on. Saturday’s breeze didn’t materialize until just after the
race was called, but Sunday’s came through like a charm……..enough for
back-to-back races with most sailors taking a refreshing dip before they even
reached their docks. (A side note…..Tower, Minnesota, which was just as hot as
we were on Sunday, registered a brisk 33 degrees by Monday night).
THANKS TO THE KOTZ’S……..for
allowing about a hundred of us to experience group heat exhaustion at their
residence. They were gracious hosts
and the beverages and food fare were fine……..even though anything that even
resembled a chip managed to turn soggy within a matter of seconds.
INTERLAKE REGATTA…….is
being hosted by US in a week and a half, with races being held Friday, August 2
through Sunday morning, August 4. The
regatta co-chairs report that all is under control……….but (you guessed it)
we still need taxi boats, especially on that Friday.
The taxis, spectator boats and chase boats were awesome during the MC
Invitationals two weeks ago and that same effort will be more than appreciated
during Interlakes, when the number of boats will double.
Please give Dick Casey a call (357-6627) if you can help out.
FLEET CAPTAINS……..if you
haven’t contacted Rick Fitch with a list of your fleet members who will be on
the Interlakes team, it’s not too late………but it’s darn close to too
late. Rick needs to know by the end
of the day on Wednesday, July 24 the names, sail numbers and (if any team
members are USSA members) their USSA membership number.
The USSA membership apparently saves you $5.00 on your registration fee.
A-BOAT INVITATIONAL REGATTA……..was
held this past weekend at Pewaukee in Wisconsin.
Team Chaos carried the CLYC banner into battle.
Unfortunately, I haven’t hear anything but the results.
There were an impressive 23 A’s sailing and Chaos snuck into the top
20. Some guy named Buddy won and
some other guy named Andy got second.
CHECK OUT MC INVITATIONAL REGATTA
PIX…….on the Home Page of the CLYC Web Site.
Thanks to Diane Cutler’s “Cutler Event Photography” there are about
220 or so race pictures that you can peruse at your leisure.
With that many photos, even those who did as poorly as I did can probably
find a shot of themselves somewhere in there.

Last weekend was yet another in a
string of beautiful weekends. The
sailing was very shaky on Saturday and Sunday, but all else was just fine. Even sitting around all day Saturday waiting to see if there
would be any wind couldn’t have been more enjoyable.
MC INVITATIONAL REGATTA
REPORT………We can all pat ourselves on the back once again for
putting on a splendid regatta for 50 MCs from around the country.
Mother Nature won’t get a high five for wind management…..but that
was really the only letdown. Friday
night at the Yacht Club followed by the Surf, and Saturday night at the Outing
Club were outstanding events. Dan
Fink (MC 2044), who is both an ILYA and IMCCSRA board member, may have summed it
all up best: “I can’t remember the last time the invite was this cool of an
event.”
As far as the races went, Friday’s
light/medium east winds were a mystery for everyone.
I believe that the 3 races sailed that day doubled the number of east
winds I have raced in on Clear Lake in my lifetime.
Saturday was flat, flat, flat. And
Sunday’s single early morning race was really pretty nice, until the final leg
turned into a death march. PRO
Craig Caslavka and his crack team deserve a lot of credit for race management
under difficult conditions.
You can check out the CLYC Web Site
or the ILYA Web Site for results. The
home team didn’t fare too badly, with 9 boats in the top 23.
Eric Protzman, who didn’t let chairing the regatta get in the way of
good racing, was the top CLYC finisher with a 8th overall.
Mike Risewick was the top Junior in the fleet and garnered 10th
overall. Byron Beasley was 2nd
in the Masters division and 12th overall.
We had several top 5 finishes in races, and Tom Birdsall led the 2nd
race for quite a while, until finally settling for 2nd.
Eric and Nancy Protzman, who
deserves a round of applause themselves, offer their own kudos to those who
helped make this the type of CLYC-sponsored regatta that has made our club the
envy of the ILYA:
“CLYC showed once again why Clear Lake is a favorite destination for sailors and increasingly for MC Sailors. The co-chairpersons want to thank all these people for their contributions to this successful event:

…..and to those who contributed without the recognition here they deserve.
Also to the skippers and crew who traveled from around the country with
their boats and compliments for all of you.
And finally to Stu Oltrogge for his leadership as commodore.
…………and please (really) take a moment and email
Eric Hood and thank him for the tickets for the JD Simo/Lonnie Brooks concert
Friday night at the Surf (eric@od.northsails.com).”
By the way, the Buildings and Grounds
Committee’s Mark Tesar reports that “the new YC building worked
beautifully for the regatta. There were many positive comments from the regatta
guests, especially those that were here 2 years ago for MC Nationals.
A huge thanks to Carol Casey and everyone else that helped keep it clean
and tidy during the event. It’s
in better shape now than it was at the beginning of the weekend.”
All of what you see above is a
testament to the volunteers in our Yacht Club who step up when something
needs to be done, oftentimes without being asked.
Members of other Yacht Clubs are always amazed at what we are able to
accomplish through volunteerism alone…….and, shucks, we just think it’s
normal.
ON TO INTERLAKES REGATTA……..in
2 ½ weeks we get to do it all over again!
FLEET CAPTAINS…….get the
names of your Interlakes teams in to Rick Fitch by the end of this weekend.
NO RACES THIS SATURDAY MORNING……All
fleets will race Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, because of an acute
judge shortage (as opposed to a shortage of cute judges).
I ASSUME……..you all took
my advice and attended the July 4th parade and that you were able to
admire the Sailing School Float. Make
sure you let Nancy Zanios know how much you liked it, because she made it happen
again this year. Heck, they even
had some candy left at the end of the parade route!
C INVITATIONAL REGATTA……is
this weekend at Minnetonka. I know
at least Bill Nicholas will be representing CLYC there.
Good luck.
I know I promised to publish First Series results in this
issue, but I once more find myself out of room and out of time.

July 9, 2002
Now that’s what I call a fairly outstanding July 4th
holiday. Admittedly, the weather
got a little strange for awhile on Saturday but overall Clear Lake was a mighty
nice place to be. This week will be
spent gearing up for the MC Invitational Regatta with races running from Friday,
July 12 through Sunday, July 14.
JULY 4TH REGATTA RESULTS…….Even though lack
of wind (and an abundance of waves) kept the Saturday morning fleets off the
lake and thunderclaps kept the Saturday afternoon fleets off the lake, we were
able to get back-to-back races in during Sunday’s light to medium air.
I think we had the most boats out there of any weekend so far this year.
Hats off to the victors:

INTERLAKES
QUALIFYING………The July 4th Regatta was the last weekend
for qualifying for the Interlakes Regatta.
Many of you should be receiving phone calls from your fleet captains
informing you that you qualified and asking whether you plan on representing
Clear Lake in the upcoming event. Since
the regatta is being held here at Clear Lake this year, I’ve got to think it
will be hard to say no……..
PARTY
ANNOUNCEMENTS………….
(1) CLYC members
are welcome and, in fact, greatly encouraged to attend either of the evening
get-togethers during the MC Invitational Regatta. Friday night is a casual
dinner at the Yacht Club ($10.50/ person and includes beverages and dinner). Saturday night ($15.00/person includes beverages and dinner).
For both event, beverages start getting served at 6:30 p.m. with dinner
following at 7:00 p.m. If you would
like to attend please email Eric Protzman (eprotzman@aol.com)
by 5 p.m. Wed., July 10. After that
he will still do his best to accommodate requests as best he can, including any
YC members who sign up during regatta registration without having contacted
Eric.
(2) Also, an early reminder
that the next Yacht Club party is at the Kotz’s on North Shore on Saturday
July 20 with food honors going to the E’s, Cougars, X Parents and C’s.
REGATTA
CREWS…….are always needed when the MCs come to town.
So, if you would like a chance to participate in a national event with
great sailors, let Eric Protzman (357-1418 or eprotzman@aol.com)
know. Also sign up at the Yacht
Club on the crew list if Eric can’t hook you up with a skipper right away.
The information you need to provided is your NAME, WEIGHT, AGE, PHONE
NUMBER, and whether you are available FRIDAY, SATURDAY OR SUNDAY.
REGATTA
TAXI, CHASE AND SPECTATOR BOATS………Last I heard from Bob Swanson,
more and more people were volunteering to help out with these all-important
functions. I do know he can
definitely use more taxi boats for Thursday through Sunday.
And the more chase and spectator boats the better.
Please let Bob or Eric Protzman know if you want to help out.
FREE ILYA-SPONSORED
MC CLINIC………..On Thursday, July 11 from 2:00-7:00 (right before the
MC Invitational Regatta) the ILYA will be hosting a clinic for MC sailors,
whether they are sailing in the regatta or not.
Kevin Jewett, Rick Trester and Dan Fink will spend the first few hours
doing small group work, followed by a large group for starts and buoy roundings.
Meet on the waterfront in front of the YC or join them out on the water.
What a great way to pick up a few pointers………..
INTERLAKES
JUDGING NEEDS………PRO Craig Caslavka just needs one boat (and driver)
for course setting at the Interlakes Regatta.
If you don’t know anything about course-setting, don’t
worry………you will be ably assisted in your boat by Gil Bovard and John
Toepfer, who know all that stuff.
ADVANCE
WARNING……We are short some judges on the weekend of July 20, so there
will be no Saturday a.m. races. All
fleets will sail Saturday afternoon and all fleets (except the C’s) will race
Sunday morning.
FAMILY
NIGHT REVISITED…….Family Nights were so successful last season they
are being rerun again this year. Unfortunately,
with all the major regattas we have this year it’s been rather hard to
schedule. But plan on next
Wednesday, July 17 from 6:00-8:30 or so at the Yacht Club.
It’s BYO everything (except grill)…..oh, and add 1 dish that you can
share. If you’d like, bring a
boat. Or if you are interested in
trying out a boat, call well ahead to Mary Risewick (357-5155) and she will do
her best to make arrangements.
FIRST
SERIES RESULTS……..I’m out of space.
Stay tuned for next week’s Crow’s Nest.

July
2, 2002
Kinda hard to complain about the lack of wind anymore this year. It seems that every race for the past few weeks (except, of course, the #$!@&(%$#@ Dad/Lad) has been 15-20 knots. And everyone must be getting used to it……fewer and fewer boats are showing us their bottom sides. Sounds as if it will be a vintage July 4th this year, with lots of good sun and sweltering heat. Make sure you get to the Independence Day parade and check out the Sailing School float. And Yes our Commodore Stu turns 40 this weekend.........
4TH
OF JULY REGATTA………is
this weekend, so look for back-to-back races on Saturday.
This will be your last chance to get in races and raise your scoring
average in order to qualify for the Interlakes Regatta that will be held here
August 2-4.
BOARD
MEETING….. is this
Saturday, July 6th at the Yacht Club at 7:30
a.m. (the time is not, I repeat not, a typo…….but I sure
wish it was). It sounds like most
of the time will be spent on reports of the upcoming regattas.
SPEAKING
OF REGATTAS……we’re
only about a week and a half away from the MC Invitationals to be held here at
Clear Lake July 12-14. This should
be a good-sized regatta with 60 or so boats…….and I’m sure chairperson
Eric Protzman could always use some more volunteer help.
Call (357-1418) or email (eprotzman@aol.com)
if you are interested in getting involved.
This should be a fun regatta, especially if the winds continue to hang in
there the way we’ve seen these past few weeks.
NOTICE
TO ALL CLYC MEMBERS…..The
Yacht Club building’s security system will be armed during the 4th
of July holiday (I believe on strict orders from the Director of Homeland
Security). So, from July 2 through
July 8, please do not enter the building unless you know how to disarm the
system. If you need to get in and
don’t know the disarming procedure, please call Mark Tesar (357-8642) for
instructions.
ANOTHER
MESSAGE FROM YOUR SCORER…..This
past weekend, there were 3 unregistered sails used and nobody reported what boat
should really be scored. If you use
a sail that is not what you are registered under, please tell either the judge
at the finish line of your race or call the scorer, Mark Tesar
(see phone number above) so you can be scored correctly.
Whoever is sailing Cougar US-282 and Hobie 102054…..that means YOU.
(Ed. Note: This is not,
strictly speaking, a homeland security issue, but it is entirely possible that
if we don’t know who is out on the race course, some terrorist could
infiltrate the event………..and the results could be
devastating………..not only could a terrorist spread fear on the course, but
he (or she) might actually finish ahead of you!!)
Give
a carnie a hug this week……….

June
26, 2002
Summer must finally be here. We are actually beginning to
accumulate races – there were even back-to-backs both last Saturday and
Sunday. It was windy enough (and a few of us are still rusty enough) to cause a
couple capsizes in both the MC and E Fleet.
In fact, Commodore Stu Oltrogge dunked twice in one race and still
managed to finish; last I heard, his crew, Deb Tesar, is considering a suit
mental anguish and emotional distress.
COUGAR REGATTA RESCHEDULED……..Word
from Andi Ludwig is that the Cougar Regatta won’t be held this weekend. It has
been changed to the weekend of August 24-25, which will be in conjunction with
the fleet’s annual champagne party. Stay
tuned for details.
DAD/MOM/LAD/LASS RACE…….4
dads swallowed their pride and tried to race their children’s X Boats 2
weekends ago. Winds were a little tricky and pretty light.
And I have just discovered that light winds, X Boats and me don’t mix.
I was a leg behind after 2 legs….and it didn’t improve.
Randy Kotz and Jamie Zachar obviously listened better to their crews than
Karl Langhart and I did. Actually,
my son was laughing so hard at me that he couldn’t give me any advice.
Final results were:
1. Randy and Nathan Kotz
2. Jamie and Nick Zachar
3. Karl and Chase Langhart
4.
Brad Oz and Chris Oz
REMINDER – 2 BIG REGATTAS ARE FAST
APPROACHING……………
MC Invitationals are the
weekend of July 12-14. That’s
only 2 weeks from this coming weekend. We
need taxi and spectator boats…..please email Regatta Chairperson, Eric
Protzman at eprotzman@aol.com or call him
at 357-1418. One of the keys to a successful regatta is making sure that the
participants get to their boats when they need to (hence, taxis) and that people
who want to watch the races don’t have to stand on the dock to do so (hence,
spectator boats). So please help
out. All you CLYC MC Sailors get
signed up this week on-line…you’ll find the registration at the CLYC Web
Site (www.clyciowa.com).
It’s slick and easy….which is why I’ve already done it.
Plus it’s cheaper if you get it done by June 28.
Interlakes Regatta is the
other big one that is coming the weekend of August 2-4.
The need is the same for both taxi and spectator boats……please
contact Julie Oltrogge at 357-8957 if you can help out.
Plus PRO Craig Caslavka is in need of some judging help. He needs a mark
setting boat for the E,C, MC course to assist the 2 other boats he’s already
got lined up. And he needs a boat
with 4 volunteers for the X, M, 420 course to assist the other 2 boats that will
be there. Please call Craig at
357-4652 or email him at clcaslavka@mchsi.com.
Of course, there are a
multitude of other volunteer functions for both regattas that you can pitch in
and help out with. Call Eric P.
(see above) for the MC event and call Joanne Nicholas (357-2630) or Margaret
Osmundson (357-5513) for the Interelakes event….let them know that you’d
love to help out and they will steer you in the right direction.
SAILING SCHOOL IS IN FULL SWING……The
first session started this past Monday and hopefully the weather has been
cooperative.
THE SAILING SCHOOL REDUCTION ACT…..is
still in effect. Check your
newsletter from a couple of weeks ago, or look in the “4 Sale” section of
the CLYC Web Site. There’s an X
Boat cockpit cover, an E Boat cockpit cover, 7 classroom chairs and 1 inflatable
boat that the Sailing School would like to unload for very reasonable prices (or
best offers). There haven’t been
any takers yet, but I’m sure that will change.
Let Mark Tesar know at 357-8642 or mark.tesar@kingland.com

June 11,
2002
All of a sudden we had a weekend
worth being a part of.
The 20 mph winds predicted for Saturday didn’t materialize (in fact it
was dead flat for the a.m. group), but it turned out to be a nice afternoon of
racing nonetheless, once all the skeptics finally left their docks.
Sunday morning proved a bit more challenging……just ask the 6 MCs who
took baths during the race (ed.’s note: nearly all of them righted themselves
and got back into the race…..2 of them still beat me……………nobody said
life was fair).
LAST WEEKEND’S PARTY…….was
a lot of fun and, I think, a success. As
is their custom, the social members put out the best spread of hors d’oeuvres
we see each year. We got to see how
the new building will handle parties…..the answer is “really well.”
And we tried out the BYOB policy that we will continue to use for
functions at the YC building. I
think it worked fine, but would be interested in hearing some feedback from
those of you who were there. A BIG
THANK YOU to all those who were kind enough to donate a shower gift to the new
clubhouse…..all sorts of those absolutely necessary odds and ends that make
the whole building program work are now there thanks to your generosity.
SAILING SCHOOL……….is
fast approaching. Registrations are
streaming in, but even more would be welcome.
The instructors tell us they would love to see even more brand new faces
this year. I know there are some of
you who have friends or relatives who will be visiting you for only a short time
, but would still like to learn to sail or to improve their sailing skills.
If you give Mark Tesar a call at 641-357-8642 he should be able to work
something out so that visitors who have that “short timer” problem can still
make use of the sailing school without going through an entire 3 week course.
LAD/MOM/DAD/LASS………..or
is it Lass/Mom/Lad/Dad ??……..anyway that X-Boat race where the kids turn
over the helm to their parents (and then laugh at them)……….is this Sunday,
June 16 at 2:00 p.m. If the weather
throws us a major league curveball, the make up date is Sunday, June 23 at the
same time. So get out there and
give your children something to laugh at, even if it is at you.
REMINDER TO MC SAILORS……..the early registration deadline is June 28 for the MC Invitationals that we are hosting July 11-14. With 26 MCs registered this year, I’m sure we’ll have a bunch of our home team participating. Registering by the 28th will save you an extra $20…Detailed information about the regatta can be found at the ILYA web site (which you can easily connect to by using the CLYC Web Site’s “Yachting Links” Section)………..or if that techno stuff doesn’t come naturally to you, just give the Regatta Chair, Eric Protzman, a ring at 641-357-1418.

June 4, 2002
By my calculations
Mother Nature is only going to let us race about 12 races this
summer…..one for each weekend from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Actually, we haven’t even met that average yet.
The schizophrenia continues……….from Saturday morning’s flat calm,
to Saturday afternoon’s breeze, to Sunday morning’s wind laced with
wandering local storms.
Since
it hasn’t helped much to study the wind, I’ve found myself paying
attention to a whole host of other things……..for example, has anyone noticed
how clear the lake is? What gives?
I could see the bottom rung on our dock ladder; I could see minnows
swimming 4 feet under the surface; maybe
I’ll get a chance to see the sunglasses that fell in last summer……
YACHT
CLUB PARTY THIS WEEKEND……….Saturday, June 8, 6:30 p.m. at the new
building. Social members get to
bring hors d’oeuvres. Remember
that no liquor or alcohol will be served, although non-alcoholic beverages and
mixes will be provided. You can
BYOB…….but if you are holding something in your hand that has more kick than
caffeine, you can’t venture on to or outside of
the sidewalks that surround the YC grounds on 3 sides or the parking lot
that is on the Water Treatment Plant side.
Keep this in mind, and the City (which just happens to be our landlord)
will be very pleased with us.
WE’RE
HOPING YOU CAN “SHOWER” AT THE PARTY………Visit Kramer Hardware,
Target or Staples and check out the shower list for the new building’s
housewarming. The gift shower will
be part of the Saturday night party. Clear
Lake Yacht Club (CLYC) is registered at all 3 of those local stores. Julie Oltrogge tells me there is a helpful hint for using the
Target registry (if you don’t want to talk to a live person, I suppose):
Go to the Wedding Registry and select Bride.
Under bride’s first name type CL and under bride’s last name type LAK.
This gets you directly to the CLYC gift list. If all else fails Julie can be reached at 651-365-5108 on
weekdays and 357-8957 on the weekend.
SCORING
REMINDER………Not that there’s been that much scoring to keep track
of, but our Head Scorer, Mark Tesar, has already come across an unknown boat
number (who is 50501 in the Hobie fleet?).
So it looks like it’s time for our annual reminder:
If you are sailing with a sail number that is different from the one
you’re registered with, please tell the Race Officer at the finish line what
number you really are, or call Mark (at 641-357-8642) and tell him right after
the race.
SAILING
SCHOOL REDUCTION ACT………The Sailing School Board has decided it
needs to pare down some of the Sailing School’s holdings.
There are some items the SS doesn’t really need and would like to find
good homes for. Please contact Mark
Tesar (at 641-357-8642 or mark.tesar@kingland.com)
if any of these are of interest to you:
2 green canvas X-Boat cockpit covers, good shape ($20 each or b/o)
1 blue canvas E-Boat cockpit cover (at least we think it’s for a E,
because it is about 18 ft. long),
good shape ($40 or b/o)
8 small desk/chairs that used to be in the old classroom ($20 each or
b/o)
1 white ceiling fan, good shape, from the old building, new kitchen is
too low for a fan ($30 or b/o)
1 inflatable boat, about 10 ft., a couple slow leaks, wood floor and
transom ($300 or b/o)
Several really, really old beat up X-Boat sails, would make good drop
cloths (Free)
GET
YOUR SAILING SCHOOL REGISTRATIONS IN……it all starts in a
few weeks.
Here’s
to hoping that we have more races than parties this season !!!

May
30, 2002
The
newsletter’s a tad bit late this week…….but the way I see it, if warm
weather can wait this long to show up, I can hold off a day or two myself.
Actually, the weather gods made some progress last weekend,
they still are hopelessly out of synch.
Except for 4 C-Boats who slipped in a “rogue” Saturday morning race,
no one else got any racing in. By
the time it warmed up on Saturday, the wind expired.
When the wind came up on Sunday morning, threatening storms scrapped the
race. It got really nice on Monday,
just in time for all those chores that have nothing to do with sailing.
THE
OPEN HOUSE…..at the
new building was quite the event. The
place was jammed by the time the official ribbon-cutting ceremony was held.
Commodore Oltrogge gave a mercifully short speech and (after several
tries with the large kid-proof scissors) cut through the ribbon.
Thanks to Denni Erickson and her recruits for coordinating the entire
function. It was a lot of fun.
I
think we’re going to try to open up the clubhouse on
Saturday afternoons after the races, so folks can hang out, compare notes about
the races or other stuff………and generally kick back and relax.
Nothing formal or fancy………..if you’d like you can even bring some
dogs or burgers, since there are a few grills.
See you there………..
REMEMBER,
THE FIRST YC PARTY OF THE SEASON……is
next Saturday, June 8, 6:30 p.m. at the new building.
BE
PART OF THE ‘HOUSEWARMING SHOWER’…..for
the new Clubhouse. As part of the
first party of the season, we will be throwing a ‘housewarming shower’.
It’s a fun way to gather needed items for the building and the sailing
school. All you have to do is
contact or visit Target, Staples or Kramer Hardware, and tell them you want to
see the shower list for the Clear Lake Yacht Club (CLYC).
Each of these stores has a list of items you may choose from and then
bring to the party. Call Julie
Oltrogge if you have any questions (651-365-5108 M-F
or 357-8957 weekends).
HERE’S A GREAT IDEA…..If you look on the CLYC Web Site you will see that you can order your own email address. The format of the address is ‘your name’@clyciowa.com. You get to keep it for life for only $10 per year. No more switching email addresses when you switch Internet providers, or when you move away for the winter months……..just keep the same email address all year long. This email address offers more security, less junk mail, and more capacity than you are accustomed to. And, yes, 99% of the email programs you currently use will work with it, such as Eudora, Netscape, Outlook, Outlook Express (and believe it or not, even AOL). It’s easy as heck to set up and will be yours for as long as you want, no matter what Internet service you use. Give it a try………I’m going to

May 21, 2002
This past weekend was very nice at
the lake…………if it were October 25.
It was sunny, there was a nice breeze…and it was not warm.
I hear that anyone on the south shore who ventured outdoors, risked a
severe case of hypothermia. If
there would have been any Tune-Up races they would have definitely been
frostbite events. Obviously walleye fisherman don’t pay no never mind to the
weather………they were out in droves on Saturday and Sunday for the big
contest, although I have not heard if anyone got the $1000 fish.
They would have had to add at least another zero to that prize amount to
even get me to think more than a nanosecond about going out there.
MEMORIAL DAY REGATTA…..Hopefully
you were all able to get your boats in, even if using them was out of the
question…….because this weekend is regatta time.
Due to a severe race officer shortage, there will be no Saturday morning
races on May 25. All fleets will
sail back-to-back races on Saturday afternoon, May 25, at 1:30 p.m., and all
fleets will sail Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m.
BEHOLD THE NEW STARTING
SEQUENCE…………Last weekend a sheet was attached to the newsletter
that showed the brand new starting sequence we will be using this year for
races. Try to familiarize yourself
with it, since it will be used beginning this Memorial Day weekend.
THERE IS AN ADDITIONAL SLIGHT CHANGE
to the sequence on that sheet. PRO
Craig Caslavka has proclaimed:
“A blue
attention flag will be hoisted with a sound signal approximately 5 minutes
before the actual starting sequence and lowered with a sound signal
approximately one minute before the actual starting sequence.
The sound signal WILL NOT be a gun.
It is important to remember not to start your watch on the attention
signal. This attention signal will
be used on Saturdays and Sundays by all Race Officers. All boats can be under tow during this attention signal
sequence.”
The reason for this attention flag sequence is so that the
very first fleet (usually the E’s) has some idea when the starting sequence
will actually get underway.
Memorize all this………….There will be a
quiz…………like around 1:30 p.m. Saturday on the water.
Craig Caslavka will hold a STUDY SESSION at the Yacht Club
on Saturday, May 25, at 10:00 a.m. for those who have questions on how the
new-fangled starts are going to work.
OPEN HOUSE AND RIBBON
CUTTING………..for the new building is this Sunday, May 26 from 1:00
– 4:00 p.m. Come and see what it
looks like…..and bring your
friends. There will tables to sign
up anyone interested in joining the Yacht Club or enrolling in Sailing School.
THE FIRST YACHT CLUB PARTY OF THE
SEASON……….is fast approaching.
The party will be held at the new CLYC building on Saturday, Jun 8, at
6:30 p.m. Social member are asked
to bring hors d’oeuvres. No
liquor or alcohol will be served (but it is OK if you BYOB), although
nonalcoholic beverages and mixes will be provided (see below for some of the new
rules regarding events at the YC building).
In addition to our normal party activities, we will be throwing the Yacht
Club a “HOUSEWARMING SHOWER” complete with cake and gifts.
We though this would be a fun way to gather needed items for the building
and the sailing school. If you
would like to give a gift for the shower, you may contact or visit Target,
Staples or Kramer Hardware. Let the
store know you wish to see the shower list for the Clear Lake Yacht Club (CLYC).
A list of desired items has been designated at each location and you may
choose an item to purchase and bring to the party.
Please try to only purchase items that are on the list since these were
chosen specifically to accommodate the needs of the building and the sailing
school. If you have any questions, contact Julie Oltrogge at
651-365-5108 (M-F) or 357-8957 (weekends).
SPEAKING OF FUNCTIONS AT THE NEW
CLUBHOUSE………Commodore Oltrogge wanted me to remind you that the
Board has decided to implement the following use guidelines and liquor
restrictions for events at the new building:
The use of the building will be only for CLYC and CLYCSS events. Public or private use will not be allowed.
Liquor will be allowed on the premises, but will not be provided by the
CLYC or CLYCSS. Due to city
ordinances, liquor that is brought onto the grounds and is opened for
consumption must remain on the grounds within the area bounded by the sidewalk
on 3 sides and by the Water Treatment Plant parking lot on the 4th
side. The sidewalks, the parking lot and anything outside of them are considered
outside of the grounds and open liquor is prohibited there.
I am hoping this will be the last issue of the Crow’s
Nest this season where we have to spend lots of time on rules and regulations.
But it’s good to get it out of the way early.
Pray for good weather !!

May 13, 2002
It’s kind of hard to get in the sailing mood when Mother Nature isn’t cooperating. It’s way too cold and it’s way too wet. Ducks and geese are probably ecstatic. Good for them.
As for the rest of us………
GET YOUR YACHT CLUB REGISTRATIONS IN NOW !!!…..
GET YOUR SAILING SCHOOL REGISTRATIONS IN RIGHT AFTER THAT !!! …
Forms for both registrations were attached to the last newsletter. You can also print copies off the CLYC Web Site. You can even do your Yacht Club registration on-line through the web site. How can we make it any easier (other than making the payment for you)??? If you still seem to be short a form, just get in touch with me and I’ll see what I can dredge up for you.
TUNE-UPS ARE THIS WEEKEND………….The
schedule is for a 1:30 p.m. race on Sat., May 18 and a 10:00 a.m. race on Sun.,
May 19. PRO Craig Caslavka says he
is primed, but you should train your binoculars toward Craig’s shore if the
weather is not being cooperative.
MEMORIAL DAY REGATTA…………will
be that next weekend. And due to a
shortage of judges, there will be no races the morning of Sat., May 25.
All fleets will sail at 1:30 p.m. that day, and at 10:00 a.m. the next
day, Sun., May 26.
NEW STARTING SEQUENCE………Attached
to this newsletter is the new form of starting sequence we will be using
beginning this season. It’s the
sequence that US Sailing has been pushing for a couple of years now.
Most of the ILYA lakes have now adopted it.
For those of you who have been attending off-season regattas you’ve
already experienced the joy of this new phenomenon. For the rest of
us…..ignore the attachment at your peril!!
PRO Caslavka informs me he will start using the new format Tune-Ups
weekend. Plus, he will be available
at the Yacht Club on Sat., May 25 at 10:00 a.m. to discuss the new sequence with
anyone who wants to talk about it.
BOARD MEETING IS THIS
SATURDAY………May 18, 9:00 a.m. sharp at the Yacht Club building.
There should be table and chairs there by then….
PUBLIC OPEN HOUSE AND RIBBON CUTTING
CEREMONY……….for the new building will be Sun., May 26 from
1:00-4:00 p.m. The ribbon cutting is at 2:00 p.m. All CLYC members are welcome and encouraged to attend.
In fact, Yacht Club and Sailing School information will be available at
the Open House, so bring along any prospective members and anyone interested in
sailing school.
SOME REGATTA REPORTS……….Word
is that Eric Protzman walked away with top honors at the “Holiday In Dixie”
regatta in Shreveport, Louisiana. Congrats,
Eric. And our Commodore, Stu Oltrogge, attended Lake Harriet’s
Spring Regatta this past weekend and promptly declared it was “everything a
regatta shouldn’t be”….i.e. cold, rainy with winds ranging from ghosting
to godawful. Glad it was you, Stu,
and not me……………
CHECK THESE OUT…………The
“Ships Store” page on the CLYC Web Site is under construction.
By the end of this month you should be able to order Yacht Club logoed
apparel off of it.
Also, if you can get your
hands on the May issue of Sailing magazine, there is an article and photos on
Yacht Club members Ken and Susan Tartar where they discuss their sailing apparel
business, Chapin Company.

April
19, 2002
Yesterday it was 85.
Today it’s 40. It must be
spring in the Midwest. Which means,
of course, another summer sailing season is just around the corner.
Hope you all had a fine off-season.
You’ll find a lot of paper attached
to this newsletter, but it’s all important stuff.
There’s the Yacht Club registration form; there’s sailing school
information and registration; there’s
a calendar of 2002 events; and there’s a volunteer sign-up sheet.
YACHT CLUB REGISTRATION……The
form should look familiar. The only
new item is the line where you can obtain through our web site an email address
with “@clyciowa.com” as the address, for the minor fee of $10.00.
Harry Alcorn can arrange the whole deal for you.
May 15 is again the deadline to get your registration in…..if you miss
that date you won’t be included in the yearbook AND you will be dinged for an
extra $10.00. The yearbook is going
to print that 2nd week in May so we can actually have yearbooks
available when the season starts……that’s why it’s important to get
everything in as soon as possible. Rumor is that Val LaFrenz and Dawn Southwick are doing great
with ads and Denni Erickson has the yearbook well under control…..as usual.
SAILING SCHOOL INFO AND
REGISTRATION…….This shouldn’t look strange to you either.
But pay attention to the dates. And
please get your sailing school registration(s) back even sooner than your YC
registration, if you can, since classes will start in mid-June and the Sailing
School directors need to finish up scheduling their instructors.
JC Risewick, who has been head of the instructor staff the past few
years, is not going to be there this season, because he has decided that summer
school at college is so much more fun than sailing at the lake (ed.
note………..who says college doesn’t poison young minds!!).
But the rest of the experienced staff is there, chomping at the bit to
teach some folks how to sail or how to sail better……..so take advantage of
their interest and their expertise and get signed up………right away.
NEW STARTING SEQUENCE FOR RACES……..The
ILYA has adopted US Sailing’s new starting sequences and CLYC is following
suit. HRO Craig Caslavka will tell
us exactly what that means in our next newsletter.
I don’t think it’s particularly difficult to understand, but from the
little I know, it’s going to sound like World War II around the starts.
CALLING ALL JUDGE WANNABEES……..We
have had the privilege of having one of the (if not the) best judging crew in
all of the Inlands. But they could
use some assistance from anyone who is interested, even if only on a part-time
basis. It’s a lot easier to learn
when you’re learning from the best. You can contact Craig Caslavka if you’re
interested……or fill out the volunteer sign-up sheet that’s attached at to
this newsletter.
CONGRATS TO HRO CASLAVKA……for
being awarded his U.S. Sailing Race Officer certification.
It just keeps getting better and better.
TWO BIG REGATTAS THIS SUMMER………Interlakes
and the MC Invitational will be here this summer within about 3 weeks of each
other, so it should be exciting. Expect
about 120+ boats for Interlakes and 60+ for MC Invites. Eric Protzman is
chairing the MC event and Joann Nicholas and Margaret Osmundson are heading up
the Interlakes event. The chairs of
those regattas are looking for any help you can give them, so give them a ring
(before they give you one).
BUILDING UPDATE……..The
finishing touches are going in. The
doors and windows which were vandalized over the winter by some gutless wonders
have been replaced. There will be a
Ribbon Cutting and Open House on Sunday May 26.
On June 8, the first party of the year will be held at the new clubhouse
and the theme will be a “shower” for supplies for the building………more
on that in future editions.
CALENDARS ARE ATTACHED……An
events calendar is attached, which I think is a great idea.
You can post it on your fridge or your closet and you won’t lose track
of all the YC and Sailing School activities that will be going on this season.
VOLUNTEER SIGN-UP IS ALSO ATTACHED…….We’ve never formally done this before, but we want to be able to reach out to all those who are interested in helping out the YC is some way, large or small. You’ll find a sign-up sheet at the end of all the paper attached to this newsletter which you can fill out and send in. The YC is purely a volunteer organization and will always stay that way………it’s a great group to work with and welcomes new people with new ideas who want to help out.
