Dec  2007

The snow’s flying.  There’s ice everywhere.  It must be time to wrap up another year and put a bow on it.

I worked up some cute Christmas ditties, like:

“On the first week of summer the season gave to me, one Memorial Day Regatta……On the second week of summer the season gave to me, two Yacht Club parties…….On the third week of summer the season gave to me, three weekend races…..”

Or, better yet:

“Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the Club

Not a creature was stirring, there was no hubbub;

The sails were hung in the basements with care,

In hopes that brand new sails would soon join them there;

Sailboats were nestled all snug in their barns

Having given way to iceboat runners by Sarns;

And mamma in her Musto and I in my Gill

Had just settled down after eating our fill;

When out on the lake there arose such a clatter,

Was it iceboats? Kite skiers?  Aw, what does it matter?”

BUT, as you can see, I ran out of gas, time and ideas.  So, the Christmas ditties ended there.

Thinking back, the Clear Lake Yacht Club did experience a good 73nd season.  We had regattas for the A Boats, the C Boats, Hobies and Optimists.  We crowned champions in each fleet:

            X Fleet Champion:                    Emily Oltrogge
            MC Fleet Champion:                Stu Oltrogge
            C Fleet Champion:                    Tom Birdsall
            E Fleet Champion:                    Jamie/Lori Zachar
            Hobie Fleet Champion:            Bill Wilson
RC Laser Fleet Champion:        ????? (we’ll let you know next year!)

We also recognized the accomplishments of several YC members:

Crane Trophy (for contributions to the CLYC):                         Eric Protzman
Loose Anchor Award (for behind the scenes support):              Carolyn Hanson
MacNider Trophy (for most improved sailor):                           Bill Wilson
Marie O’Brien Trophy (for best regatta performance):            Stu Oltrogge
Top Female Opti Sailor:                                                              Aspen Lundeen
Best Opti Regatta Performance:                                                Nick Holtz
            Best X Junior:                                                                             Emily Oltrogge
Best Female X Boat Sailor:                                                        Emily Oltrogge

And we say thanks to all those who volunteer their time, effort and money to help make this sailing thing that we do so enjoyable year after year.  And we say so long to outgoing Commodore Mark Tesar and Secretary/Treasurer Dave Miller………and welcome to incoming Commodore Brian Edison, Vice Commodore Dave Miller and Secretary/Treasurer Marcus Lundberg.

AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR SAILING SCHOOL……….

“The CLYCss is growing!  Please welcome Kim Holtz to the board.  Our sailing school provided lessons to 150 students this past summer at the lowest price possible.  The addition of a used X Boat really rounded out our X fleet teaching.  Unfortunately, our motor boats spent more time in the shop than on the water!  So….we are starting a fundraising campaign to purchase new motors and a used inflatable.  These boats are so essential to the safety of our instructors and students.  Please think of the Sailing School when you are considering your year-end donations.”
                                                            Ho, Ho, Ho
                                                            Margaret Osmundson, President-CLYCSS

AND FINALLY A WORD FROM THE CLYC BOARD………….

“During the final Board meeting of 2007 Sailing Season, it was decided that our registration fees, for both Social and Racing members, should be increased.   The following will apply:

Family Memberships - $100  (Racing and social families require a Family Membership)

Registration of each Racing Boat (except X) - $140

Registration of each Racing X - $50

Note: You must have a Family Membership to register a racing sailboat.  As an example, a member family registers an MC, the cost will be:

Family Membership -       $100
Racing Boat -                    $140
Total -                                $240

If they also have an X:
Family Membership -          $100
Racing Boat -                       $140
            Racing X -                  $50
Total -                                   $290

Some explanation of the reasons for these increases is in order:

1.      Decreased regatta profitability.  The Club has traditionally relied on income from regattas to cover a portion of the Club’s operating expenses and financial support of the Sailing School.  Unfortunately, there is a general decline in regatta attendance across all of the ILYA member lakes.  This decline in attendance directly impacts regatta profitability overall.   Additionally, in the coming year, we have no major scow regattas.

2.      Increased operating costs.  Insurance, utility and party costs have increased significantly.  Our operating budget would have been impacted even more if not for the decreased Judging and Yearbook publishing costs.  Many thanks to the judging teams for their selfless giving of time, donation of their boats and gas to put on great club racing every weekend.  Also many thanks to the volunteers that put together the yearbook and sell the ads.  Without these efforts, well, financially we’d be in the “doldrums” to say the least.

3.      Increased financial support of the Sailing School.  The Sailing School has been receiving additional financial support from the Club over the past several years.  The Sailing School Board is looking at ways to decrease their reliance on the Club for this continued level of financial support.

We started 2007 with an anticipated budgetary loss.  Due to a smaller than anticipated profit from our regattas, we ended the year with a greater loss.  Our 2008 budget indicates we will be moving towards a more evenly operated expenditure and closer to adding to surplus.

I hope that the membership understands the need for the registration fee increase.  A visit to several of the other ILYA member club’s websites will help you to understand that although this is a significant increase, we still have a very competitively positioned membership cost.  If you have additional questions concerning this issue, please contact Brian Edison bjedison@mchsi.com or Dave Miller davem500@mchsi.com”

And with that…….MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT!!

August 30, 2007

Holy carnage, Batman!  Sunday wasn’t supposed to be very windy…..and in fact it wasn’t all that windy……but you wouldn’t have known it by watching the two races.  E’s and MC’s were capsizing, masts were breaking, boats were death-rolling…..we had it all. It was so much more peaceful on Saturday……….Anyway it was a great way to wind up the Second Series and the regular season.  I hear that 4 of the 5 Season Fleet Championships went down to the wire.

LABOR DAY REGATTA……..is this weekend.  For those of you who survived last weekend, look for back-to-back races on Saturday.

THE ANNUAL CLYC YEAR END BANQUET………is this Sunday, Sept. 2 at the Yacht Club.  It starts at 5:00 p.m.  Dinner is catered by The Rib Crib at will be served around 5:30 p.m.  Trophy presentations will be after that.  All for only $6.00 per person.

3 THINGS TO DO BEFORE THE BANQUET……..

-         Traveling trophies to Jeff Nicholas
-         Blooper nominations to Stu Oltrogge
-         Interlakes Regatta dues to Dave Miller

4. Z-33 Brooks Gooding

BELATED THANKS FROM THE SAILING SCHOOL TO RUDY WIECK AND REX BERGO…….Early this season Rex built the cool new Optimist rack you see stationed outside of the Yacht Club.  And Rudy fished through all of his old Cougar spare parts and donated a whole bunch of stuff the Sailing School really needs, like blocks and sidestays.  Thanks for thinking of the Sailing School, guys……

AND THANKS TO THE BARTELS FAMILY…..for putting on a fine MC Fleet Party last Saturday night.  This puts the pressure on next years MC Fleet Captain to top it……

That’s about it.  Have fun pulling boats out this weekend………

August 22, 2007

Weather is a mysterious thing.  And, fortunately or unfortunately, sailors live and die by it.  Last weekend we died and we lived.  We died when the deluge didn’t give us a chance to race; we lived when the lake went up……way, way up……6 inches? 7 inches?  Has it stopped yet???  Should we build an ark?  If so, how many cubits is the ark supposed to be?  And, by the way, what’s a cubit?

THE SEASON IS ENDING AND WE’RE ALMOST OUT OF PARTIES………except for:

THE ANNUAL YEAR END TROPHY BANQUET……is Sunday, Sept. 2, 5:00 p.m. at the Yacht Club.  The dinner is being catered by The Rib Crib and will be served at 5:30 p.m.  Beer and sodas will be available.  The meeting and trophy presentation starts about 7:00 p.m.  And you get all this for only $6.00 per head.  What a deal!

THE MC FLEET PARTY……is this Saturday, August 25th, at Knoer Lodge on the lakefront in Bell Harbor.  Cocktails are at 6:30 p.m. with dinner to follow.  It’s BYOB and BYOA (A is for appetite), because food is on the fleet captain, Steve Bartels.  MC Sailors, bring your crew/wife/etc.  RSVP to Steve at sbartels2@mchsi.com so he knows how many pigs to put on the barbee. Special Note To Bill Casey…..you are invited to the party even though we understand the sale of your boat is a bit up in the air.

RC LASER CLEAR LAKE FLEET CHAMPIONSHIPS…..are this week.  The Thursday Series participants will compete this Thursday, Aug. 23, at 4:30 p.m. at the Outing Club.  If the wind gods don’t cooperate, you will have a makeup on Aug. 30.

The Sunday Series participants will compete this Sunday, Aug. 26, at 3:00 p.m. at the Outing Club.  If the wind gods don’t cooperate, you are going to be out of luck, because there won’t be a makeup.

BLOOPER NOMINATIONS……should be sent in to Stu Oltrogge at Oltrogge@clyciowa.com.  This is your annual chance to skewer someone else (or yourself, if you’re masochistic) for some dumb sailing-related move they made since last Labor Day……so take full advantage of it.

IF YOU HAVEN’T DONE SO ALREADY………

(1)   Turn in your CLYC traveling trophies to Jeff Nicholas, so this year’s winners have some hardware to show off for their efforts.  Jeff can be reached at Jnichls@netins.net.

(2)   Pay your Interlakes Regatta dues, if you sailed at this year’s regatta at Lake Okoboji.  The amounts are:  E’s-$100  C’s-$80  MC’s-$70  X’s-$60.  You can either hand deliver to Dave Miller or send to CLYC, PO Box 29, Clear Lake, Iowa 50428 Attn: Dave Miller.

August 14, 2007

It was supposed to blow 20-30 mph all day last Saturday, but for some inexplicable reason, calmed down enough to have the morning races, then dropped to zilch just in time to cause the cancellation of the afternoon races, only to ramp back up a half hour later.  Go figure………  Fortunately, Mother Nature followed the script on Sunday and another Jack MacNider Memorial Regatta made it into the books.

SPEAKING OF THE JACK MACNIDER MEMORIAL REGATTA….HERE ARE THE RESULTS:

E Fleet                                     MC Fleet                                 X Fleet

1. Z-6   Jamie/Lori Zachar        1. 2340 Stu Oltrogge                1. Z-23  Emily Oltrogge
2. Z-5   Mike Lundberg            2. 1764  Randy Kotz                2.
Z-7    Drake Lundeen
3. Z-24 Bob Swanson              3. 2178  Mark/Todd Tesar       3. Z-33  Brooks Gooding
4. Z-11 Allen/Quinn                  4. 1910  Jeff Nicholas               4. Z-6    Katie Zachar
5. Z-15 Charlie MacNider        5. 2257  Eric Protzman             5. Z-1   Anne Tesar

HOPE YOU HAD FUN AT SATURDAY EVENING’S YACHT CLUB PARTY…..I know Margaret and I did.  There was just enough wind to transform the party atmosphere from “steam room” to merely “sauna” or possibly “double boiler”.  Thanks to all who brought food and served beverages, and to Mark Ebeling and Casey Callanan for making sure (as they always do) that the mixes, the booze, the keg, the tables, etc. got delivered…..and to Andi Tisor, for twisting Mark’s arm, and helping to pick it all up again on Sunday.

WE HAVE PRETTY MUCH BURNED THRU THIS YEAR’S PARTY SCHECULE……..THE FINAL “HAPPY HOUR” OF THE SEASON FOR YC MEMBERS AND NON-MEMBERS……is this Friday, August 17 at the Yacht Club, from 6:30-9:00 p.m.  Remember, this one is BYOB & S (Drinks, Snacks, Tableware, and a dish to share).

E FLEET PARTY…..is at the same time and place as the “Happy Hour”, according to Fleet Captain John Vratsinas.  E Fleet members are to bring an appetizer to share, but pizza, pop and beer will be provided.  Be sure to let your crews know so they can also come and party with the rest of you.

THE ASSOCIATION FOR THE PRESERVATION OF CLEAR LAKE……is holding its annual picnic and information session on Friday, August 17 too, at State Park……..so you could be very busy (and very full) if you try to make it to every event that night.

THE PROTZMAN FAMILY….has informed us that Eric’s father, Jim, passed away on August 13.  Yacht Club old-timers will remember him as an avid supporter of sailing in general and the CLYC in particular, who loved nothing better than to spend an afternoon sailing around Clear Lake whenever the opportunity presented itself.  Our thoughts are with you……….

August 8, 2007

The odds finally caught up with us last weekend.  We weren’t able to get in any races for the first time this season.  Saturday proved to be a bit too windy and Sunday proved to be just the opposite. As PRO John Hanson explained on the radio Sunday morning, if we could have taken the average of Saturday’s and Sunday’s breezes we could have had some nice racing. C’est la vie………

CLYC PARTY THIS WEEKEND………at our house (that would be Brad and Margaret Osmundson’s, 507 South Shore Drive), Saturday, August 11, starting about 6:30 p.m.  All CLYC Members are invited.  MC sailors and CLYC Board Members have the honors for bringing hors d’oeuvres and serving beverages.

JACK MACNIDER MEMORIAL REGATTA…..is this weekend for all fleets, except the Hobies.  The Hobies will hold theirs on the weekend of August 18-19.

X CHAMPIONSHIPS REPORT…….We sent 3 of our X Boaters to Lake Delavan in Wisconsin last weekend for the annual X Championship Regatta…..and they all made it back with a lot more big-fleet experience, which is always hard to get on your home lake.  Drake Lundeen sailed in the Senior Fleet and Emily Oltrogge and Anne Tesar sailed in the Junior Fleet.  As far as I know this was Anne’s first big regatta, so we can cut her some slack.  But both Drake and Emily finished at or near the top half of their respective fleets in the overall standings…..and Drake was running 2nd for a while in Race 6.  I hear, however, that the real highlight was when the CLYC X Team fought their way to the finals of the volleyball tournament that was played in front of the Friday night party crowd.  They finally lost to Lake Nagawicka, but showed that we western lakes can’t be counted out of anything.

THE DON COE MEMORIAL HOBIE REGATTA…..is coming September 14-16.  The Hobie fleet is looking for a couple volunteer boats to help with judging.  They have the gun boat lined up but need a gate boat and a mark boat.  Please let Todd Wilson (todd@hollingsworthmfg.com) know if you can help out.

I think I’m out of stuff.

August 2, 2007

OK, lots of old news to report since I neglected the newsletter last week in favor of getting boats ready for the Interlakes Regatta

A OPEN/ C INVITATIONAL WRAPUP……..Another great Clear Lake regatta.  Too bad there were only 25+ boats here to experience it.  As usual at Clear Lake, the volunteers outnumbered (and just possibly outperformed) the competitors.  Co-chairs Denni Erickson and Margaret Oz, who deserve their own thanks and appreciation, want to thank so many of you. The list reads like a phonebook (and, like the phone book, some names will be missed…… we apologize for the oversight and our memory lapses)  From those who opened their homes (Pam Little, the Reubers, Paulsons, Osmundsons, Risewicks, Nicholases,Hanson, MacNiders, the Outing Club contigent of Winsors, Johnson, Schurtzes and Protzmans), to those who handled registration (Val LaFrenz, Sharon Long, Kris Miller, Nada Oltrogge, Jackie Lowry, Ellyn Dix, Diane Kotze, and Myrna Barnes), to those who helped put in boats (Bill Nicholas, Tom Birdsall, the Zachars), to those who helped taxi and spectate (especially Bob Swanson, Frank Clark, and Rick Fitch), to T-Shirts designer (Bill Casey and his Iowa City crew) and T-Shirt maker (Dave Theiss), to the pizza godfather himself (Tom Birdsall), to the providers of mountains of cookie dough (Lundeens), to the cookie baker (Ginny Gipper), to that clean tablecloth guy (Steve Swift), to breakfast servers (Jean Bergo, Meredith Myers, Sally Hartman), lunch servers (Nancy Zanios, Dorothy Westly, Margaret MacNider, Mary Siberell, Bev Koch, Jo Cutler, Fran Oz, Ruth Miller, Julie Birdsall), to the Friday night party providers (Ericksons, the Taylor/Zachar clan, Risewicks, Russ Schurtz), and the Saturday night party people (Val Edison and Barb Nicholas, Joanne Nicholas and sister at the CL Arts Center……Charlie and Kathy MacNider at their home), to the A Fleet judges (Charlie MacNider, Mark Ebeling, Stu Oltrogge, Randy Kotz), the C Fleet judges (John Hanson, Anne Schurtz, Thomas Zanios), to awards man (Tommy Erickson), to the scorer (Mark Tesar), the caterers (The Evening Lions and Backyard Deli), to the money man (Dave Miller), to the YC “sitter” while everyone is out on the race course (Julie Oltrogge), to those who volunteered to crew for sailors in need, to our sod layer and waterer (Deb Tesar)…..and to anyone else who wiped off a table, dumped a trash can, swept a floor, or did anything else to help out………we can’t thank you enough.  It takes a village, and fortunately we have a helluva village!!!         (Ed. Note:  I hope I didn’t just turn this Crow’s Nest into a PG-13 rating…..)

BELIEVE IT OR NOT THERE HAVE BEEN SOME OTHER EVENTS………

OPTIMIST NO TEARS REGATTA….was held at Lake Okoboji a couple of weeks ago.  Our own Jacob Wessels took 1st overall in the Junior Fleet and our own Nicholas Holtz finished 2nd overall in the Senior Fleet.  Well done, guys!  Thanks to Chase Langhart (the Sailing School’s head Opti instructor) and Nancy Lundeen for making sure it all worked out well for the kids.

CLEAR LAKE’S OWN OPTIMIST REGATTA…..was not blown off the lake as it has been the past few years….and it was a success with 18 boats and 30 sailors in attendance.  Your overall winner was Aspen Lundeen (who also won the Senior Fleet).  Jacob Wessels took honors in the Junior Fleet.

INTERLAKES REGATTA…….was last weekend at Lake Okoboji.  The Oltrogge clan (Stu in MC’s and Emily in X’s) was oh so close to winning overall, but in the end had to settle for second place (by 1 point for Emily and by 2 points for Stu).  And the MC and X teams both came in second as well.  Maybe next year………

E FLEET PARTY………has been moved from Aug. 18 to Aug. 17, according to Fleet Captain, John Vratsinas, and more details hopefully will be forthcoming.

THE ASSOCIATION FOR THE PRESERVATION OF CLEAR LAKE ANNUAL PICNIC……is Aug. 17 at the State Park Shelter.  Tickets came with your CLTel bill, but you can also get them at the Chamber of Commerce. This is a great chance to speak directly with those who are involved with the various lake restoration projects, so take advantage of it.

CLASSIFIEDS……….Bob Baehr bent the mast on his ’92 Johnson MC (#1410) and is looking for a replacement.  If you happen to have one lying around or know of someone who does you can reach Bob at bob.baehr@equitrust.com or at 515-210-0006.

July 18, 2007

Unfortunately, I missed last weekend at the lake and therefore have absolutely no idea what was going on.  Some would say I have absolutely no idea what is going on even when I’m at the lake.  However, I did hear a wild rumor that Steve Swift actually raced an MC and didn’t capsize. He should be congratulated for celebrating a major milestone in his sailboat racing career.

IT’S REGATTA WEEKEND AT CLEAR LAKE….We are hosting the A Open/C Invitational this weekend.  Registration is Thursday, July 19 from 2:00-8:00 p.m. Racing will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  The C Boats will be in the “big” lake and the A’s will be in the “small” lake.  I know that many of you have been tapped by regatta co-chairs, Denni Erickson and Margaret Oz and have agreed to volunteer your time to make this a successful regatta.  Thank you for that.  Those of you who haven’t yet taken the opportunity might want to contact either Denni or Margaret to offer your help.  I do know we always need taxi and spectator boats.  And good luck to the C sailors who will be representing Clear Lake.

SIGN UP FOR THE PARTIES THIS WEEKEND……Even though the Friday (the 20th) and Saturday (the 21st) night events are tied to the Regatta, they are open to all CLYC members.  Friday night is really set up for everyone to have fun, with dinner at the Yacht Club building and a good steel drum band.  Saturday night offers your choice of parties, either join the A Boaters at Charlie and Kathy MacNider’s or party with the C Boaters at the Clear Lake Art Center.  All these get-togethers start at 6:30 p.m.  Admission for each event is one dead president (Andrew Jackson), and you have to sign up in advance during registration on the 19th…….but that shouldn’t be too hard to do.

NO THURSDAY NIGHT RACES THIS WEEK…..because of the Regatta.

AS PROMISED WEEKS AGO, HERE ARE THE FIRST SERIES RESULTS……

E Fleet                                     C Fleet                                     MC Fleet

1. Z-15 Charlie MacNider        1. Z-2    Tom Birdsall               1. 2178 Mark/Todd Tesar

2. Z-5   Mike Lundberg            2. Z-1    Mark/Todd Tesar       2. 2340 Stu Oltrogge

3. Z-11 Allen/Quinn                  3. Z-110 Don Taylor, Jr.           3. 2257 Eric Protzman

4. Z-24 Bob Swanson                                                                  4. 2012 Byron Beasley

                                                                                                      5. 2410 Steve Taylor

            X Fleet                                     Hobie Fleet

1. Z-23 Emily Oltrogge             1. 105343 Bill Wilson

2. Z-7   Drake Lundeen            2. 107914 Chris Wessels

                                                   3. 96812   Charlie Clemens

INTERLAKE REGATTA……is next weekend at Lake Okoboji.  By now you should know if you are on your fleet’s team…….but even if you aren’t, the Regatta is now an open regatta that anyone from the E, MC or X Fleets can sail in.

THE CLYC LOCAL NO TEARS OPTIMIST REGATTA……is happening at Clear Lake as I write this.  Hopefully there are no tears and hopefully Mother Nature has (finally) smiled on this little regatta with some Optimist-size breezes and no storms.

SPARE MOTOR LYING AROUND YOUR GARAGE OR SHED?........If so, you could really help out the Girl Scouts at Camp Tanglefoot.  The motor on their 24 foot pontoon, used for many of the camp acitivites, has died. Cindy Findley, the camp director, is looking for something at least 60hp, with a long shaft to fit a pontoon.  The boat is configured for an Evinrude, but they could probably make other brands work. Here’s your chance to make a tax deductible donation to the Girl Scouts….or a sale for a nominal price……and make yourself some more storage space at the same time.

July 11, 2007

I don’t know about you, but I had a hard time leaving the lake after the e…x…t…e…n…d…e…d  4th of July holiday.  The weather was just so…..summery. The fireworks (and especially the finale, which probably showed up on several orbiting satellites) were spectacular.  It seemed like the carnival was here for a month (more than enough time to get up the courage to hug your favorite carny).  The parade was great, but hot….and very late, due to the hordes of presidential candidates who descended on Clear Lake to press the flesh with us heartland dwellers. My impression of the Bill and Hillary show is that both were very willing to mingle and engage in conversation (much to the chagrin of the Secret Service); Bill is the taller and older of the two…….but Hillary is the one running for office.  Thanks to the Hansons and some last minute volunteers, the Sailing School replacement float made its annual appearance.  Oh, yeah and we got some sailing in.

THANKS TO THE TAYLOR CLAN……for hosting last Saturday’s CLYC party at a new venue, and especially to Stephanie Taylor for adding some pizzaz with her decorating skills.

THIS WEEK FEATURES A COUPLE FRIDAY THE 13TH GET-TOGETHERS AT THE YACHT CLUB BUILDING……..

The Sailing School Family Fun Night….will run from 5:30-7:30 p.m. for all sailing school participants (regardless of which session they’re in), their parents and families as well as would-be participants.  Remember it’s potluck, the CLYCSS furnishes grills and you bring everything else, including your own food, beverages, tableware, and a dish you can share with the group.

CLYC “Happy Hour……for YC members and potential members, will follow immediately thereafter from 7:30-9:30 p.m.  Remember this is BYOB (wine or beer or whatever…..but no liquor).

THE A OPEN/C INVITATIONAL REGATTA AT CLEAR LAKE IS FAST APPROACHING…….It runs from July 19-22.  Many volunteers have already committed to help, but anyone with a boat who will be out watching (especially on Friday the 20th) please contact Margaret Oz (inremoz@aol.com or 641-357-5513) to let her know you would be available to taxi and/or pick up spectators and crew.

Plus…..all CLYC members are welcome to join in the Friday and Saturday night regatta festivities, BUT YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST sign up for them during regatta registration from 2:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 19 at the Yacht Club (and, if you’re not sailing in the regatta, it would be very, very helpful if you also would contact co-chair Denni Erickson at Erickson1@netins.net or 357-7342 with your intentions so we can get an accurate number of meals prepared….but you still have to actually sign up at registration).  Friday evening, the 20th, is  6:30 p.m. dinner at the Yacht Club (beef, chicken or veg kabobs) served by the Clear Lake Lions while you are serenaded by a fantastic steel drum band “discovered” and donated by the Taylor/Zachar families.  Saturday evening, the 21st, you have a choice: (1) Attend the C Boat Party at the new Clear Lake Arts Center, or (2) attend the A Boat Party at Charlie and Kathy MacNider’s. Both start at 6:30 p.m. and both menus are the same…salad, fetticine, and pork or chicken. Each dinner is going for the low, low rate of $20.00.

THE CLYC LOCAL NO TEARS OPTIMIST REGATTA…..will be Wednesday, July 18 for all you Opti sailors.  We’re expecting maybe eighteen boats….and better weather than last year.  This will be an all-day event starting at 9:00 a.m., so get out and show everyone what you can do…….

THERE WAS A CLYC BOARD MEETING LAST SUNDAY……at which a couple of notable decisions were made.  First, after conferring with (maybe) all fleet members, who submitted a vast array of varying responses to whether we should combine all fleets into one race on Saturdays, it’s been decided to keep things the way they are.  That is, X’s and C’s race on Saturday mornings and E’s, MC’s and Hobies race on Saturday afternoons.  Second, because Clear Lake Boats has changed their billing policies, those who in the past were able to charge their gas at the gas dock because they were on Yacht Club or Sailing School “business” now will have to pay out of their own pocket, get a receipt, and submit it to Dave Miller, the YC’s Secretary-Treasurer, for reimbursement.

INTERLAKE REGATTA CORRECTION……The Interlake Regatta Board has notified us that there are some errors in the dates and locations published in the ILYA’s Scow Slants publication for the Interlake Regatta.  Here is the correct info……..the regatta will be held July 27-29 and all boats (E’s, C’s, MC’s and X’s) will sail at Lake Okoboji.

LAKE GENEVA HELD ITS ANNUAL GLSS RACES ……for X Boat racers this past Monday and Tuesday, and Emily Oltrogge represented Clear Lake.  I don’t know the results, but it’s always a great teaching regatta for serious junior racers.

THE E INVITATIONAL REGATTA AT WHITE BEAR LAKE….is this weekend and I believe Bob Swanson and crew are representing CLYC there….so good luck to “Crews Control”.

THE MC INVITATIONAL REGATTA….is also this weekend at Lake Minnetonka.  For some reason, I have no idea who might be attending from CLYC’s  MC Fleet, but I bet someone will.

Sorry, no space (or time) to fit in the promised First Series results….so stay tuned.

Later, Oz

July 3, 2007

Not much sailing on Saturday, but Sunday was a different story.  The wind kept building right up until the Dad/Mom/Lad/Lass race and maintained enough strength to create some memorable moments. Tomorrow is the Fourth, and word is Bill and Hillary are going to pay a visit during the annual parade.  It’s certainly a special feeling knowing they are kicking off togetherness once again starting in good ole Clear Lake.

THE DAD/MOM/LAD/LASS RACE …….was held in perfect conditions.  Just enough wind to wreak some havoc but not enough to wipe out the fleet.  Nancy Lundeen must be commended on her series of pirouettes performed at the second windward mark and John Vratsinas deserves mention for traveling at speeds high enough to total mainsail halyards AND jib halyards.  Here are the results for posterity, so read them and weep..

            1.                   Emily and Stu Oltrogge
2.                  Brooks Gooding and Dan Allen
3.                  Maggie, Henry and Chris Long
4.                  Drake and Nancy Lundeen
5.                  Anne and Mark Tesar
6.                  Jordan, Jacob and Chris Wessels
7.                  Logan and Stephanie Taylor
8.                  Megan and John Vratsinas

THERE WILL BE A SAILING SCHOOL FLOAT IN THE PARADE THIS YEAR!!!!  John and Carolyn Hanson answered the Sailing School’s plea for help in replacing the float trailer we have used in years past.  It will be Float # 63.  Sailing School participants who want to walk with the float in the parade should be at the Circle of the High School by 9:30 a.m. sharp on July 4.  Parents, you can pick up your kids at Lincoln School after you see the float go by.

CLYC PARTY FOR ALL MEMBERS…….is this Saturday, July 7, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Don, Jr. and Nancy Taylor’s home, 917 South Shore Drive, just north of the Outing Club. E’s, C’s and Hobies have the honors for bringing treats and serving beverages.

4TH OF JULY REGATTA RESULTS ARE IN…….Although Saturday was pretty dismal for racing, Sunday turned out to be fine as we got a pair of races in.

E Fleet                                     C Fleet                                     MC Fleet
1. Z-15 Charlie MacNider         1. Z-2    Tom Birdsall                1. 2340 Stu Oltrogge
2. Z-24 Bob Swanson                  2. Z-1    Mark/Todd Tesar       2. 2178 Mark/Todd Tesar
3. Z-7   Crayke/Grover               3. Z-110 Don Taylor, Jr.          3. 2257 Eric Protzman
              Windsor                                                                           4. 2410 Steve Taylor
4. Z-50 Schurtz/DerricK Johnson                                                 5. 2012 Byron Beasley
5. Z-6   Jamie/Lori Zachar

            X Fleet                                                 Hobie Fleet
1. Z-7   Drake Lundeen (tie)                  1. 105343 Bill Wilson
1. Z-23 Emily Oltrogge (tie)                   2. 499791 Mike Pruchnicki
3. Z-33 Brooks Gooding                         3. 96812  Charlie Clemens
4, Z-1   Anne Tesar                                 4. 107914 Chris Wessels
5. Z-11 Maggie Long/Ben Miller           5. 110071 Lynn Twedt

FIRST SERIES RACING IS ALSO OVER……but you’ll have to wait until next week to see the results (that’s called a “teaser” in “The Business”).

INTERLAKES REGATTA QUALIFYING IS COMPLETE AS WELL….and Fleet Captains will be notifying team members to determine who will be attending the regatta at Lake Okoboji this year.  All sailors should remember that Interlakes is open to anyone who would like to participate, but team members are the only ones who will be scored in the team racing format that Interlakes practices.

X BOAT FLEET CAPTAIN DRAKE LUNDEEN HAS A WEEKEND REPORT FOR US…...The x-boats are off to a good start and I think we will have five strong boats at Inter-lakes.  Those skippers are Emily Oltrogge, Brooks Gooding, Ann Tesar, Maggie Long, and Drake Lundeen.  If you are a registered x-boat skipper, try to get out on the lake as much as you can.  The fleet is having a lot of fun and we would love to see more sailors on the starting line.

As for the Dad/Mom/Lad/Lass race, Stuart and Emily Oltrogge came in first place, and Dan Allen and Brooks Gooding came in second.  The winds were very strong and I learned a few things as I battled the conditions with my mom.  We didn’t get first because evidently, decks are slicker, and tiller extensions are longer than when she was a kid.  I think she just may be a little rusty.

June 27, 2007

It’s time to gear up for the 4th of July. So pull out your orange life jackets and your white captain’s hats so you can fit in with all the holiday visitors to Clear Lake.

4TH OF JULY REGATTA……is this weekend, so expect back-to-back races on Saturday.  Also, if memory serves me (which it does less and less), this will be the last weekend for Interlakes Regatta qualifying.

DAD/MOM/LAD/LASS RACE…..has been rescheduled to this Sunday, July 1 at 2:00.  This should give you X Boat parents a singular opportunity to experience some serious holiday motorboat chop…….whoopee!

THE FIRST SAILING SCHOOL POTLUCK OF THE SEASON…..is this evening, Wednesday, June 27.  I’m sure most all of the sailing school participants already know about the details, but just in case……..it starts at 5:30 p.m., CLYCSS furnishes the grills and the location; you furnish your own food, beverages and tableware plus a dish you can share with the group.  This is always a fun get-together, so don’t miss it……..

THE SAILING SCHOOL IS SCRAMBLING TO FIND A TRAILER FOR THE FLOAT IN THE 4TH OF JULY PARADE……..apparently the person who has loaned us a trailer in the past has disappeared.  The CLYCSS has retained the cast members from “Without a Trace” to locate this person, but decided in the meantime we would also tap the CLYC membership to see if anyone has a trailer to loan the Sailing School so they can keep up their string of years of appearance in the parade.  The trailer dimensions that fit are 18 feet long, 8 feet wide, 6 foot long wheel wells located 6 feet from the front of the trailer.  Please contact Margaret Oz (641-357-5513) or Mark Tesar (641-357-8642) if you happen to have such a beast and are willing to loan it for a day or two.

THE A OPEN/C INVITATIONAL COMBINED REGATTA……….is fast approaching, and Denni Erickson and Margaret Oz (the regatta co-chairs) are looking for helpers.  If you would like to house some (always low maintenance and nearly always amiable) sailors during the event to be held here at Clear Lake from July 19-22, please contact Mary Risewick at 515-229-6191 or tweeterb@gmail.com.  If you can help out at all on serving meals, or operating taxi or spectator boats contact Margaret Oz at 641-357-5513 or inremoz@aol.com

IF YOU EVER GET THE CHANCE…..visit Torch Lake in Michigan.  5 members of our MC Fleet did just that last weekend to attend MC Nationals along with 83 other MC sailors.  3 of our group (Mike Risewick, Mark Tesar and Stu Oltrogge) finished in the top 17, with Mike and Mark bringing home some hardware for their overall finishes.  I’ve never seen an inland lake with water that looks like the Bahamas….until I saw Torch.  It’s pretty spectacular.

BY THE WAY, THE AMERICA’S CUP…..is happening in Valencia, Spain as I write.  The 4th race in the best of 9 series between Switzerland and New Zealand was this morning.  If you have the Versus channel on your TV you can view the races at 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on each race day.  Or you can visit www.versus.com to get the scoop on what’s going on as well as the race and TV schedules.

June 19, 2007

I would have to say last weekend came in like a lamb and went out like a lion.  It was hot and sultry on Saturday with a fading light breeze.  The Saturday a.m. racers at least got races in…….but by the afternoon it had gone dead flat.  So, on Sunday it’s about 9 mph at the start of the race, but everyone knows the forecast is predicting anywhere from 20-30 mph.  The only question is, when will it hit.  I would say that happened about the end of the 2nd beat……. Mother Nature really brought it and I don’t think she’s let up yet……….

THOSE HEAVY WINDS…….caused the annual Dad/Mom/Lad/Lass race to be cancelled.  It is rescheduled for Sunday, July 1 at 2:00 p.m.  That should give all you parents ample time to prepare mentally for the embarrassment.

LAST SATURDAY’S PARTY AT THE YACHT CLUB……went off without a hitch, despite the threatening weather.  Thanks to Board Members and X Boat Parents for serving up our ration of chips and dip.

WE HAVE A BREATHER…..no formal Yacht Club parties of any variety for a few weeks, at least until we invade the Don Taylor, Jr. abode on July 7.

SAILING SCHOOL HAS BEGUN……….The first session is underway, so you will be seeing quite a bit of daytime activity at the Yacht Club.  Many thanks to Rex Bergo for designing and building a new outdoor rack for storing the Optimists.

WIRELESS INTERNET HAS ARRIVED AT THE YACHT CLUB BUILDING….For those of you who just have to be connected at all times, when you’re at the Club you can search for a signal called “clyc”……and you can do your work stuff while you should be having fun and vice versa. I personally prefer the “vice versa.”

MC NATIONALS IS THIS WEEKEND……at Torch Lake, Michigan.  The MC Fleet is sending 5 of us over to confirm whether the lake is really as gorgeous as advertised……and, oh yeah, we’re supposed to bring back hardware of some kind.

IF ANYONE IS LOOKING FOR AN A BOAT RIDE DURING THE A/C INVITATIONAL….here at Clear Lake next month,  Brad Robinson is bringing down his hot V-38 boat and is looking for an “all-Iowa” crew to help man it for driver Willie Crear.  The boat won’t be scored during the regatta, but it should be a lot of fun.  I hear you can find info on the new boat at www.victorybydesign.org/V38.htm. If you’re interested contact Dan Allen at 641-357-0093 or dsallen@netins.net.

June 13, 2007

Last weekend was a pretty clear signal that summer has arrived.  Pretty soon I won’t even wince when the lake water sprays me.  The breezes were nice and we got in all the racing we needed.

“HAPPY HOUR” LAST FRIDAY…..was well-attended.  Stephanie Taylor was a fine host.  I don’t believe the C Fleet jury declared anyone (over 21) ineligible to share in the adult beverages.  Apparently the lie detectors and truth serum Fleet Captain Birdsall administered randomly to the happy hour attendees either revealed nobody was lying or (more likely) just didn’t work. It seemed that everyone was sporting an “I am a C Boater” sticker. And most decided to visit the park afterwards to sample some of the classic tunes pounded out by the “Take Me Back” bands

AND THE PARTIES JUST KEEP COMING…..this Saturday, June 16, is the 2nd CLYC party of the season.  Festivities commence at 6:30 p.m. at the Yacht Club with Board Members and X Boat Parents as hosts for hors d’oeuvres. Because this party is at the Yacht Club it is BYOB, although someone will be donating a keg.  Bringing hard liquor is not recommended due to the city law banning hard liquor in the parks. Remember, if you’re a CLYC member in whatever way, shape or form you are invited.

THE ANNUAL DAD/MOM/LAD/LASS RACE……is this Sunday at 2:00 p.m., weather permitting.  No need to remind the kids that this is their one real chance each year to openly ridicule their parents while those parents attempt to (unsuccessfully) hang on to their dignity while sailing X Boats around the course.

A LOGISTICAL REMINDER……….If you haven’t been receiving your weekly Crow’s Nest by email (or by snail mail for that matter), please let Harry Alcorn, our “webmaster”, or me know so we can correct the problem. Although, if you really think about it, those of you not receiving your newsletter probably won’t see this reminder anyway……….but, what the heck, we tried.

HOPEFULLY ALL HAVE RECEIVED THEIR CLYC YEARBOOKS….by now.  The cover is again graced by the art of our own Jim Larson, whose artistic contributions displaying lake life are always stellar.  And please, make an effort to patronize those people and businesses who purchase ads in the yearbook and who support your CLYC.

AND DON’T FORGET……Thursday night races at 6:30 out on the lake.  Sunday afternoon RC Laser races at 3:00 or so on the Outing Club dock.

June 5, 2007

I may have my weekends mixed up.  Last weekend’s weather seemed much more like a Memorial Day weekend than the real Memorial Day weekend’s weather. The Saturday afternoon race got called (appropriately) after a lap and a half due to thunder and (more importantly) lightning, which, incidentally bailed me out of the last place position I found myself in (there is a God).  But all the rest of the races managed to sneak in between storm cells.  Overall it was kinda cold, kinda rainy and kinda windy…….

BUT THAT DIDN’T STOP THE PARTY…….Thanks to the MacNider clan for somehow making sure that the eye of the storm stayed right over their home so the first Yacht Club get-together of the summer could happen without a hitch.  The Social Members made it yet another in a string of fine dining experiences. In fact, it may have gone too well…..and a little too late. Those of you who have not left yet should probably go home now………and that’s because……..

THERE’S A ‘HAPPY HOUR’ THIS FRIDAY EVENING AT THE YACHT CLUB…….from 6:00 to 9:00.  It’s BYOB&D (drink and food).  Bring yourself, your friends, your kids, their kids…..anyone who would like to visit the Club and who just might be interested in sailing, learning to sail, or just hanging out.  Stephanie Taylor will be the host.

To add a little spice to the event, the C Fleet will be holding their annual party as part of the Happy Hour.  C Fleet Captain Tom Birdsall has arranged for a complimentary adult beverage keg to be there and is willing to share it……on one condition, you must have sailed on a C Boat sometime in your life….and you must be able to convince the (arbitrary and capricious) C Fleet jury that you in fact did so……I would bring pictures, maybe trophies, and probably sworn affidavits.

Since this is also “Take Me Back” weekend in the park, you can also stroll over and enjoy the bands.

APOLOGIES TO THOSE OF YOU WHO RECEIVE THE CROW’S NEST BY SNAIL MAIL…….we had a little glitch in the mailing process and last week’s issue didn’t make it out in hard copy.  I think we’ve fixed it……but the proof will be in the pudding.

SAFETY REMINDER………During the Memorial Day Regatta we had a situation where a boat lost a mast and drifted for 20 minutes or so on the cold water before someone offered to give them a tow.  Please, please, please if you are spectating in your boat (or even if you’re on shore) keep an eye out for stranded boats that have tipped over or broken down or are otherwise in some distress and offer them assistance……your reward will be in heaven.

REMEMBER THURSDAY NIGHT RACING......at 6:30 each and every Thursday evening. Unfortunately last week’s judge didn’t remember….well actually he remembered….but it was a few hours too late.  Just another early season glitch that should get fixed…….again, the proof will be in the pudding.

May 30, 2007

OK, so Memorial Day wasn’t 90 degrees like it was last year….but it also wasn’t 50 degrees like it has been in other years.  It was a decent weekend…..and we got all our racing in.  All in all, it was a fine kickoff for the 2007 season!

INAUGURAL YACHT CLUB PARTY OF THE SEASON IS THIS SATURDAY…..June 2, 6:30 p.m. at Charlie and Kathy MacNider’s,  441 North Shore Drive.  You should be breathless with anticipation, not only because of the great venue, but, more importantly, because the Social Members are handling hors d’ oeuvres and beverage distribution.  Remember, all CLYC members are invited to all Yacht Club parties, whether or not you have the privilege of bringing the eats.

MEMORIAL DAY REGATTA RESULTS……..a few of  us just couldn’t get our acts together for one reason or another and missed out.  But for those of you lucky enough (or smart enough) not to be us, the sailing looked to be very nice. Good winds on Saturday and a fading breeze on Sunday morning.  Congrats to the following early season winners:

E Fleet                                     C Fleet                                     MC Fleet

1. Z-15  Charlie MacNider       1. Z-1    Mark/Todd Tesar           1. 2284 Mike Risewick

2. Z-5    Mike Lundberg           2. Z-110 Don Taylor, Jr.              2. 2340 Stu Oltrogge

3. Z-11  Dan Allen/Ed Quinn    3. Z-2     Tom Birdsall                  3. 2012 Byron Beasley

4. Z-24  Bob Swanson                                                                 4. 2405 Marcus Lundberg

5. Z-6    Jamie/Lori Zachar                                                           5. 2178 Mark/Todd Tesar

            X Fleet                                     Hobie Fleet

1. Z-7   Drake Lundeen            1. 105448 Todd Wilson

2. Z-23 Emily Oltrogge             2. 105343 Bill Wilson

3. Z-1   Anne Tesar                  3. 108196 Alexander Wessels

4. Z-11 Maggie Long/ Ben       4. 107914 Chris Wessels

             Miller                          5. 94425   Regan Elsbury

The RC Laser Fleet, which now numbers 18 boats, held it’s opening season sailing event at the Outing Club on Sunday afternoon.  I don’t know if there were any racing results, but, from my spectator boat vantage, there was more than enough fun to be had going around the buoys.

CLYC YEARBOOKS ARE OUT…..and if you don’t have it by now, it should be in your hands any moment. The CLYC Yearbook Team again raised the bar…..and exceeded it. Denni Erickson, Dawn Southwick and Val LaFrenz did all that stuff during the cold months of the year so we can enjoy the warm months. NOTE: There are “Save The Date” cards in each yearbook showing this year’s party and open house schedule. Put these on your fridge to serve as a reminder each time you fetch some beer or pizza. The party schedule is also in the yearbook, where it lays out who is responsible for bringing hors d’oeuvres.

IF YOU SOMETIMES THINK IT’S HARD TO GET YOUR BOAT OUT OF THE BARN AND ON TO YOUR LIFT…..you might want to compare notes with Bill Nicholas.  Bill was all of a half mile from his farm last Friday night, towing his boat down Highway 18, when he got sideswiped and run up against a utility pole, totalling his boat, his truck, nearly his trailor….and leaving him unscathed physically (although I noticed a few more gray hairs on his beard Saturday).

THERE WAS A BOARD MEETING ON MONDAY…….no one appeared to make public statements and this is the only news article you will read about it.  Some of the more notable topics included discussion of moving what are now Saturday morning races to Saturday afternoon when the rest of the fleets race. PRO Charlie MacNider also informed all that the price of shotgun shells is keeping pace with the price of gasoline…..and that he will be using the horn rather than the gun in the future…..unless of course the price of air starts going up too.

REMEMBER THAT ONE OF THE BENEFITS OF BEING A CLYC MEMBER IS YOU CAN RENT THE YC BUILDING OUT FOR EVENTS……Pricing is dependent on the type of event you are interested in holding.  Contact Chris Wessels (641-357-4577 or ChrisWAdvisor@yahoo.com)  for details.

WE’VE GOT SOME REGATTAS THIS SUMMER AND A HUGE ONE NEXT YEAR….In July we will be hosting a combined C Invitational/A National Regatta. In September, the Hobies will have an event.  But in September, 2008 we will host a week-long national regatta for Hobie 14s and 16s from all over North America….so you’ve got a year to dust up on your cat skills (as in the boat, not the mountains).

THURSDAY NIGHT RACES…….are happening again this year. They start at 6:30 p.m. each and every Thursday night, beginning May 31 and running thru August.  So go out and get some practice in or introduce someone else to our great sport.
