US SAILING’s One-Design Sailing Symposium
A Success in Georgia; National One-Design Awards Announced

One-Design Club of the Year: Clear Lake Yacht Club
Clear Lake Yacht Club in Clear Lake, Iowa, has received the One-Design Club of the Year award. The Club is run entirely by volunteers and offers a variety of racing events for numerous one-design classes including Hobie 16, Optimist, E, C, MC and X classes as well as a sailing school, with US SAILING certified programs for both youth and adults. The Club consistently operates with a positive cash flow enabling them to fund regattas, youth programs and scholarships as well as make charitable donations. Each year, the Club has seen increases in every class due to the visibility of the club in the community and the success of the sailing school converting students to lifelong sailors. Clear Lake Yacht Club has become a centerpiece of the Iowa community, not typically thought to be a sailing region, by creating a fun, successful, social, one-design sailing organization run solely by dedicated volunteers for the past 75 years.

August 28, 2008

THE END IS NEAR.   There is no avoiding the fact that Labor Day weekend has arrived again this year.  Hopefully we can cram all those things we’ve been putting off all summer into the final 3 days of the regular sailing season.

A FLEET PARTY……….Speaking of cramming events in, the A Fleet will hold its annual party at Tom and Denni Erickson’s on Saturday evening, August 28 at “7:00ish”.

LABOR DAY REGATTA……..is this weekend.  This is the last chance for some of us to get racing hardware (even if it’s the Juno Cup for last place in the last race).  So expect back-to-back races on Saturday.

THE ANNUAL CLYC YEAR END BANQUET……..is this Sunday, August 31 at the Yacht Club.  The catered dinner commences at 5:30 p.m. for $7.00 per person. The awards portion of the festivities will start around 6:30 p.m. and should wind up when the Commodore extinguishes the massive Olympic torch……….wait a minute, that was a different event held last week.

TO DO’S BEFORE THE BANQUET……….

-                                        Return traveling trophies to Jeff Nicholas

-                                        Submit Blooper Award nominations to Stu Oltrogge

THE SEASON ISN’T REALLY OVER UNTIL THE HOBIE NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS END……..(hmmmm….maybe they are the ones extinguishing the Olympic torch)

In any event, here is a message from the Hobie Fleet about the upcoming week-long regatta starting next Thursday at Clear Lake……….

Hello to our friends and members of the Clear Lake Yacht Club.  We are still looking for some Registration and Early Morning Yacht Club Volunteers.

(Weather Permitting)  Finally, we would love to have CLYC members take advantage of joining us for the Awards Banquet Friday Night at the Surf Ballroom.  Reservations and a small $15/person fee is required.  Bob Dorr & the Blue Band follows at 8:00.  At intermission, we will draw the winning tickets for the Raffle.

You can buy Raffle Tickets at the CLYC Awards End of the Year Banquet.  Grand Prize is Choice of:  1 – 2008 Hobie 16 Racing Catamaran or 2 – 2008 Hobie Waves.  Second Prize is a really nice 2008 Hobie Mirage Kayak with the Pedal Drive System.  Third Prize is a William Gardner Limited Edition Water Color Print that was on the cover of this year’s CLYC booklet.  Tickets only cost $20/each.  Buying raffle tickets really helps our event budget and therefore gives us a better opportunity to share our revenue with the Clear Lake Sailing School! J

Please let myself or Chris Wessels know if you have any questions or could help us with the volunteer duties listed above.

Sincerely,

Todd Wilson

August 20, 2008

I believe the dog days of summer may have finally arrived this week…….just in time to start thinking about Labor Day, back to school, and all that other stuff we do in the autumn.

Too bad the C’s and the A Boat missed a nice sailing weekend.

EVERYONE’S TRYING TO JAM THEIR PARTIES INTO THE LAST FREE WEEKEND………..I don’t know about the C Fleet or the Hobie Fleet, but the E’s, MC’s and X’s are all holding their fleet parties this Saturday and Sunday.  Here are the details:

E’s --   Saturday, Aug. 23, 6:30 p.m. at the Yacht Club.  Must dress Caribbean to get in………

MC’s – Saturday, Aug. 23, 6:30 p.m. at Oltrogge’s (707 North Shore Drive).  Bring a dish to share……the Fleet Captain furnishes everything else.

            X’s --  Sunday, Aug. 24, 1:00 p.m. at Oltrogge’s.  Lunch provided.  Bring a swimsuit.

FINAL BOARD MEETING OF THE SEASON……..Sunday, Aug. 24, 1:00 p.m. at the Yacht Club.  Commodore Edison will preside over the “closing ceremonies” which I assume will be modeled closely after the Olympic ceremonies.

EARLY REMINDER……..The Year-End Banquet will be Sunday evening, Aug. 31 at the Yacht Club.  It will not be black-tie this year (for the 80th year in a row)……..and we will do our best to keep the paparazzi at bay.

AND SPEAKING OF THE YEAR – END BANQUET…………..

(1)               Those of you with CLYC traveling trophies, need to contact Jeff Nicholas (357-2630 or jnichls@netins.net) and get them to him so they can find their place of honor above someone else’s fireplace this winter.

(2)               It’s time again to dredge up stupid things your friends did this season (or in the off-season) so the BLOOPER AWARD can find its place of shame in someone’s closet this winter.  Contact Stu Oltrogge (Oltrogge@clyciowa.com) with the gory details.

(3)               For the first time in recorded history, there is no need to remind Interlakes sailors to pay their regatta fees…….because they have all paid………apparently hell has frozen over!!

INLANDS REPORT FOR C’S AND A BOAT………I understand the wind was basically nonexistent at Lake Okoboji during the C Inlands and the A Open, held at the end of last week.  For the A’s it was match racing that came down to the wire, with the Chaos team from Clear Lake driving home with the lion’s share of the hardware.  For the C’s it was nassomuch………..

August 13, 2008

Yikes!!  Hard to believe it’s only two and a half weeks until Labor Day.  Usually summer just seems short.  This year summer actually was short….and we didn’t have any spring.  If memory serves me, winter ended sometime in mid to late June and we rolled right into what I would call summer (you know…..where the weather is what we dream about in late January).  And I would be willing to bet that Mother Nature will not give us a bonus month of summer in September to make up for our loss.  We’ll just have to wait til next year……..

YACHT CLUB PARTY THIS SATURDAY………August 16,  starting around 6:30 p.m. at the Tom and Denni Erickson’s home, 101 5th Avenue North on the North Shore.  Each and every CLYC member is invited to test the tasty hors d’oeuvres prepared by the MC Fleet, who will also be in charge of beverage serving.  Hopefully, the fourth time is a charm, and we won’t have some nasty storm interfere with the festivities…….which would be a decided change from the three previous YC parties this year.

HOBIE CHAMPIONSHIPS REGATTA ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING……will be this Sunday, August 17, at 3:00 p.m. at the Yacht Club.  This is going to be a big regatta that will showcase both Clear Lake and the CLYC to a lot of people from far, far away.  And I’m sure Todd Wilson, the chair of the regatta, and Chris Wessels could use all the volunteer help they can get.  At the meeting Chris and Todd will provide details on the schedule and lists of where they need additional help. The meeting should last about an hour……Todd and Chris have made sure of that by letting me know there will be no food or drinks provided at the meeting.

E FLEET PARTY……..will be Saturday, August 23, 6:30 p.m. at the Yacht Club, according to Fleet Captain Jaime Zachar.  There is no cover charge, but you won’t get past the bouncer unless you are wearing Caribbean attire……so start rummaging through your closet……..or better yet just call Charlie MacNider to see what he’s got lying around.

ILYA CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA REPORT……..Clear Lake was represented in both the E and MC Championship Regatta this past weekend at Lake Okoboji and brought home some nice hardware for their efforts.  Winds were light and waves were heavy on the first day of racing………and the situation was reversed on the second day.  After 5 races against the 41 boat MC fleet, Byron Beasley took 4th overall (and first in the Masters (over 50) competition), Mark Tesar grabbed 7th overall, and Stu Oltrogge slipped into 8th overall.  The rest of us MCs and Es just had a good time.  Hopefully the 3 Clear Lake C Boats going to this weekend’s Championships (at Lake Okoboji as well) can keep up the good work……….

August 6, 2008

Regatta season is now in full swing and but, at least from a racing perspective, it must have been pretty quiet at Clear Lake last weekend.

NO TEARS REGATTA……..was held at Clear Lake on Wed, July 30.  It attracted 30 young Optimist sailors who were able to show off the racing skills they have been honing all summer.  Thanks to Nancy Lundeen and her fellow volunteers (including the parents of the sailors as well as the sailing school instructors) who made it all happen.  Here are the results:

            Junior Fleet                                                       Senior Fleet

1.         Jacob Wessels                                      1.         Nicholas Holtz
2.         Ana and Alex Starback                         2.         Chrissy Tesar

3.         Sophie Kroll and Emma DeJong           3.         Kristina Daoud

            Overall Winner
            Nicholas Holtz

THE ANNUAL INTERLAKES REGATTA…….was held at Lake Minnetonka last weekend.  The winds, weather and motorboat waves were all better than predicted. Clear Lake’s X Fleet took 2nd place in the team standings, after being nosed out by the Minnetonka team.  Clear Lake’s MC Fleet took top honors, distancing themselves by 150 points over the 2nd place Lake Okoboji team.  We had individual race winners in every fleet (Bill Nicholas in the C’s; Jeff Nicholas (twice) and Mark Tesar in the MC’s; and Emily Oltrogge in the X’s). In the overall individual standings Emily took 2nd and Drake Lundeen snagged 5th in the X Fleet; Bill Nicholas garnered 7th in the C Fleet (although it looks to me from the actual results that he should have been 5th);  and in the MCs Clear Lake filled 4 of the top 6 positions (Jeff Nicholas (2nd), Eric Protzman (4th), Mark Tesar (5th) and Stu Oltrogge (6th)).

REMINDER TO REGATTA PARTICIPANTS……make sure to clean your boat (or leave it out of the water for at least 5 days) before you travel to another lake.  That way we won’t be sharing the lovely zebra mussels that have invaded Clear Lake with some other lake that hasn’t yet been infested.  Amazingly, Lake Minnetonka, that has been infested with Eurasian milfoil for 20 years has not yet been attacked by zebra mussels......go figure.

I SEE THAT THE HOBIE NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS……that will be held at Clear Lake the week of Sept. 5-12 got some good press in the Globe Gazette last week.

FINALLY……..good luck to all who will be attending the Inland Championships this next week at Lake Okoboji.

July 30, 2008

Last weekend proved yet again that wind forecasting is more art than science…..and more of a crapshoot than art.  While Saturday’s general lack of breezes followed the script, Sunday’s roller coaster winds sent boats scrambling for crew between races, only to see the wind completely croak by the start of the second race.

NO CLYC RACES THIS WEEKEND……..pass it on…….  The judges held a summit meeting and agreed that, because of the Interlake Regatta at Lake Minnetonka this weekend, it made more sense to cancel races at Clear Lake.

GOOD LUCK TO THE CLYC TEAMS COMPETING AT THE INTERLAKE REGATTA THIS WEEKEND !!!! We are sending full MC and X teams, and are hopeful they will return with some hardware………

SPEAKING OF REGATTAS……..The ILYA (and the Okoboji Yacht Club) are trying hard to drum up as much interest as they can for the ILYA Championships being held at Okoboji the week of August 9-16.  Okoboji is only 2 hours from Clear Lake and is always a fun regatta venue….and keep in mind we will get to do much of our racing during weekdays when the motorboats are all nestled snuggly in their lifts.  Plus by attending you can demonstrate your support for one of our fellow “western” lakes. And registering is painless on the ILYA web site (www.ILYA.org).

MC FLEET PARTY NOTICE…….Saturday evening, August 23 at the Oltrogge residence (707 North Shore Drive).  More details to follow……..

X FLEET PARTY NOTICE……..Sunday afternoon, August 24 at the same Oltrogge residence……..as soon as the last MC sailor is removed from the lawn.

Sorry, not much else to report……….

July 23, 2008

For the first time in recent memory, the Saturday morning sailors got shut out while the Saturday afternoon sailors got in a full slate of racing.  And when Sunday dawned without a breath of air, the C Boaters never even got to take their boats off the lifts the entire weekend.  Maybe things will even out by Labor Day……

YACHT CLUB PARTY RECAP……..We have achieved the trifecta this season……3 CLYC parties and 3 storms…….and as predicted, it got a little complicated, but we still had fun…….the party location was switched to the Yacht Club building as the bad weather approached.  Many, many, many thanks to Dan Allen and wife Sara for service above and beyond……they set up, then took down, then reset up the party accessories and tables all in the midst of the elements.

JACK MACNIDER MEMORIAL REGATTA RESULTS……….Since last weekend was the annual regatta, here are the results (except for the C’s who had no races):

                        E Fleet                                                             MC Fleet
1.         Z-6    Jamie/Lori Zachar                       1.         2012    Byron Beasley
2.         Z-5    Mike Lundberg                           2.         2178    Mark Tesar
3.         Z-15  Charlie MacNider                       3.         2340    Stu Oltrogge
4.         Z-17  John Vratsinas                            4.         2000    Brad Oz
5.         Z-11  Dan Allen/Ed Quinn                    5.
2288    Nathan Kotz

                        X Fleet                                                             Hobie Fleet
1.         Z-7    Drake Lundeen   (tie)                  1.         107914   Chris Wessels
1.         Z-23  Emily Oltrogge   (tie)                   2.         96812     Charlie Clemens
3.         Z-33  Brooks Gooding                           3.         63103     Mike Pruchnicki
4.         Z-11  Maggie Long      (tie)                   4.         63059     Bill Wilson
4.         Z-77  Aspen Lundeen  (tie)                   5.         110563   Alexander Wessels

X BOATERS AT X INLANDS……..Four members of our X Fleet are traveling this weekend to Lake Oshkosh in Wisconsin to represent Clear Lake at X Inlands.  Good luck to Drake Lundeen, Emily Oltrogge, Maggie Long and Brooks Gooding……..

ENVIRONMENTAL REMINDER……Because the off-lake regatta season is now underway and because Clear Lake is now infested with zebra mussels, remember to clean your boat thoroughly (or leave it out of the water at least five days) before you head to other lakes so you don’t transport the pesky critters with you and infect someone else’s lake.

SAILING SCHOOL REMINDER…….Anyone planning to make use of the one-week Sailing School session that runs from Aug. 4-8 should send in your registration this week or call or email Margaret Oz (641-357-5513, inremoz@aol.com) to give a heads up that you are coming.

HOBIE CAT REGATTA RAFFLE……In case you didn’t know, there is a big raffle being held in conjunction with Sept. 4-12 Hobie North American Regatta at Clear Lake. For $20 you get a shot at the Grand Prize (a 2008 Hobie 16 or two 2008 Hobie Waves), the Second Prize (a new Hobie Mirage Kayak) or the Third Prize (a Limited Edition William Gardner Water Color Print).  Plus, buying a ticket gets you complimentary admission to the Blue Band concert at the Surf on Sept. 12.  You can get tickets or raffle details by visiting the first page of the CLYC Web Site (www. clyciowa.com) or by contacting Chris Wessels (641-425-8720, xanderwess@yahoo.com) or Todd Wilson (641-691-0203, commodore@fleet10.com).

July 15, 2008

The wind gods tried to keep us off the lake last weekend……but failed, after weeks of success.  We got in all our races, before the ever-strengthening breezes reached gale force velocity.  Hope you all got a chance to check out some or all of the Bicycle, Blues and BBQ events over the weekend.  As for me, I  partook of it in reverse order…..mostly BBQ, then some blues, and finally some biking (that I only watched)…..could be the reason I’m out of shape.

YACHT CLUB PARTY THIS SATURDAY, JULY 12 AT 6:30 P.M.……..This one is a little complicated, but bear with us  We had to change the location at the last minute to Barb and Bill Nicholas’s home at 1111 North Shore Drive…..BUT IF WE HAVE THREATENING WEATHER (like all the other parties this year) the location will be at the Yacht Club, because Nicholas’s indoor space is limited.  So, keep a weather eye out…..and if you show up at Nicholas’s, and the turnout seems extremely light, turn tail and run to the Yacht Club. As usual, all CLYC members of whatever ilk are invited.  E, C and Hobie sailors have the honor of presenting their favorite delectable hors d’oeuvres and beverage serving skills.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT COMBO – YC FAMILY FUN NIGHT AND SAILING SCHOOL POTLUCK……all rolled into one this Wednesday evening, July 16, 6:00 p.m. at the Yacht Club.  We decided to combine the two events, because July gets so busy and many of the partygoers are the same folks.  It’s open to all Sailing School and Yacht Club families…..plus anyone interested in considering taking part in either the YC or the Sailing School.  There will be fun and games, including a large inflatable “bouncer” (not the muscled, tattooed human kind) for the kids to work off dinner.  And if the weather cooperates, there will be some short races for the sailing school kids to show off what they’ve learned this summer.  All you have to do is bring utensils, drinks, something to grill, a dish to share with others….and your sparkling personality.

A HUGE THANKS FROM THE SAILING SCHOOL TO ALL THE SILENT/LIVE AUCTION PARTICIPANTS AND DONORS…….In case you’ve forgotten, at the last stormy CLYC party there was a rousing silent auction and live auction.  And it turned out to be a great success……..$5300 was raised for the Sailing School, and the successful bidders made off with some cool stuff.

REGATTA SEASON IS UPON US………Todd Tesar pulled off a 7th at last weekend’s MC Invitational at Lake Nagawicka.  Our A-Boat team (Chaos) is headed to White Bear Lake this weekend for the A Open Invitational.  The X Fleet attended a clinic held here at Clear Lake and run by Sam Rogers of Lake Minnetonka this past Monday so they can prepare for X Inlands at Oshkosh next week (thanks to funding from the Hansen Foundation and the aforementioned auction).

AND FINALLY A MESSAGE FROM OUR OWN ILYA BOARD MEMBER……Margaret Oz strongly encourages all of us sailors to get out and see the world, pack up our boats and travel to some regattas.  The Big Inland is at Lake Okoboji, only 2 hours away (check it out at o-y-c.org).  The Interlake Regatta is at Lake Minnetonka, only 2 hours away.  Just a tank or two of gas will get you there….unless of course you’re in Mark Tesar’s truck.

DON’T FORGET THURSDAY NIGHT RACING…….6:30 p.m. is when it starts.

Later, Oz

July 9.2008

Well, that felt a bit more like summer, but the Saturday afternoon Wind Gods are not yet following the script.  We’ll give them another chance this weekend.  So now that the level of the lake is back down, boat lifts are back off the blocks, docks are renailed, boats are repaired, and the carnie’s funnel cakes and corn dogs are finally digested…….let’s get on with the real summer.  By the way, the Independence Day festivities were wonderful yet again.  And Clear Lake must have one of the top 10 fireworks shows in the USA……I may wear sunglasses next year!!

FOURTH OF JULY REGATTA RESULTS…..are hot off the presses, and here they are:

            E Fleet                                     C Fleet                                     X Fleet

1. Z-5   Mike Lundberg            1. Z-3     Bill Nicholas              1. Z-23 Emily Oltrogge
2. Z-17 John Vratsinas              2. Z-100 Steve Swift                2. Z-7   Drake Lundeen
3. Z-11 Dan Allen/Ed Quinn     3.
Z-2     Tom Birdsall              3. Z-11 Maggie Long
4. Z-24 Bob Swanson              4. Z-110 Don Taylor, Jr.          4. Z-33 Brooks Gooding
5. Z-7   Crayke/Grover            5. Z-1     Mark Tesar               5. Z-1   Anne Tesar
                        Windsor

            MC Fleet                                 Hobie
1. 2178  Mark Tesar                1. 63103 Mike Prucknicki
2. 1910  Jeff Nicholas
3. 1764  Randy Kotz
4. 2000  Brad Oz
5. 2257  Eric Protzman

INTERLAKE REGATTA QUALIFIERS HAVE BEEN DETERMINED……and the Scorer has sent the results to all of the fleet captains, whose job it is to contact the qualifiers this weekend to confirm whether or not they plan to attend.  So, if you think you may have qualified…..and you haven’t heard from your fleet captain……ring him or her up and find out what the scoop is.

Also I’ve attached the Interlake Regatta NOR (Notice of Race) to this newsletter for all of you who may have an interest in the who, what, when, where, and how of the Regatta, that will be at Lake Minnetonka this year.

YACHT CLUB PARTY HEADS UP……I want to do my part to cooperate with the various early warning systems we all have become accustomed to.  So, not this weekend, but next weekend, on Sat. July 19 is the next CLYC party, at Bill and Barb Nicholas’s home on the north shore [Editor’s Note:  This is a last-minute change in location from the schedule that was on the pre-season schedule and that has been showing on the CLYC Web Site].  You E, C and Hobie sailors can start preparing your hors d’oeuvre spreads now, so you can fulfill your host duties.

LEUKEMIA CUP REGATTA NOTICE…..White Bear Lake is hosting the 5th Annual Leukemia Cup this September 12-14.  All classes of sailboats are welcome.  It’s a ton of fun and contributes to a great cause.  Over $240,000 has been raised by this regatta since its inception in 2004.  Check out their web site at www.leukemiacup.org/mn.

DON’T FORGET THERE’S THURSDAY NIGHT SAILING AGAIN THIS WEEK……at 6:30 p.m.

Scoring: Team Scoring uses the simplified Low-Point system as modified in the Inter-Lake Yachting Association By-Laws; individuals use the RRS 2005-2008 Low Point scoring system modified so that no races are excluded. This changes RRS Rule A2.  For the purposes of team scoring only - points will be calculated as if only top 5 team designated sailors are sailing and/or registered for the regatta. The right of appeal is denied and decisions by the Protest Committee are final.

Registration: This is a pre-registration regatta.  One check from each club shall include the sum of all individual boat fees, and include the sum of $100 for each club as well as a fee of $20 per fleet entered by that club.  You and your fleet captains are requested to complete the Registration Form for each participating fleet.  July 1, 2008

We may have to change the name of the Clear Lake Yacht Club, given that we haven’t done all that much “yachting” this season.  Maybe Clear Lake Yack Club would be more appropriate…….because the number of parties and get-togethers (where we gather to yack…..get it?) is running neck and neck with the number of races.  Unfortunately we only have Mother Nature to blame…..and she ain’t listening.

Maybe we can count on the Carnie, its assorted characters to change things.  Usually when they arrive the wind dies to nothing……..this might be the year when the wind shows up in just the right dose.

LAST WEEKEND’S YC PARTY WAS A LOT OF FUN……despite yet another blast of inclement weather.  The Yacht Club was packed and the Sailing School Auction got folks in a competitive spirit.  There was plenty of hooting and hollering during the live auction and plenty of last minute intrigue during the silent auction.  By all accounts the auction was a great success, and we should have a real live report in next week’s newsletter (once our certified auditors have tallied the totals).  But in the meantime, thanks to those of you who spent some, all, or more than all of your Tax Stimulus payment in support of the Sailing School.

THE FIRST SERIES (OR WHAT THERE WAS OF IT) IS COMPLETE AND HERE ARE THE RESULTS…………

THE 4TH OF JULY PARADE FLOAT…..is ready to go again this year.  So, if you are a Sailing School participant you get to be a part of it.   You just have to be at the float by 9:30 a.m, Friday morning, July 4 in any Sailing School T-Shirt you can find in your closet.  The float is Number 40 in the parade lineup and will be located on 1st Avenue North (that’s the street that runs parallel to Main Street).

AND FINALLY, IF YOU KNOW HOW TO RIG AN M-16……A staff member at Opportunity Village has acquired what we used to call an M-16 (and nowadays call an “M”), but doesn’t have the foggiest idea how to rig it.  If you could help, please contact Nelda Tesar at ntesar@netins.net.  Your reward will be in heaven………..

June 24, 2008

It actually started to feel like summer last weekend.  Unfortunately, the weather forecasters forgot to add 10 mph to their wind forecasts of 10-15 mph, which resulted in our getting blown off the lake Saturday afternoon and getting sent in after the first race on Sunday…..but we still got some “tiller time” in.  And the 4th of July will be upon us before we know it……..once again it will be time to hug your favorite Carnie!!!

CLYC PARTY THIS SATURDAY……June 28, 6:30 p.m. at the Yacht Club hosted by the Board Members and X Boat Parents, who will be bringing hors d’ouevres.  If there are some of you Social Members who weren’t able to make last month’s weather-distressed CLYC party to show off your hors d’ouevre preparation skills, you are welcome to do so this time around.  All Yacht Club members are invited to this event.  And remember, because this party is at the Club, it is BYOB (beer, wine and non-alcoholic drinks).

And don’t forget, the Silent Auction is really, really going to happen during this party, rain or shine.  Lots of things to bid on with all proceeds going to the Sailing School.

BOARD MEETING……this Sunday, June 29 at the Yacht Club.  First item on the agenda is a critique of each Board Member’s hors d’ouevre from the night before….

START YOUR WEEKEND AT THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SURF……on Friday, June 27 at (where else?) the Surf and enjoy the Winter Dance Party that evening, followed up on Sunday with the Lawrence Welk Allstars.  The Surf deserves (and needs) all the support it can get, and we are just the right people to help make that happen.

VHF RADIO ALERT……..The race course judges are asking those of you who have VHF radios to keep them on during the races……even if you are not racing.  That way, if someone gets into trouble on the course, the judge can announce it on the radio and request assistance, and those who are able to help out can do it.  Last weekend, the judge noticed an X Boat in distress and announced it on the radio…….but the only responses were from sailors in the race, who were not going to be much help in righting a capsized sailboat.  So please try to remember to keep your VHF radios on and tuned to Channel 72 during races, even if you are in a spectator boat or on shore…….because you never know when your help may be needed.

AND FINALLY, THE CLYC (AND THE SAILING SCHOOL) ARE NOT THE ONLY BENEFICIARIES OF JOHN AND CAROLYN HANSON’S GENEROSITY……John and Carolyn were honored by the US Sailing Center – Martin County, Florida for all they have done for that organization over the past 15 years….and were presented with a plaque inscribed with: “No matter the direction from which the winds have blown, you have been there to help us set our course.”  Ditto from all of us……

June 17, 2008

Whoa Nellie!!…….when the lake goes up a foot and a half in a few days lots of bad things happen, especially with 30 knot winds………there was a lot of flotsam and jetsam careening around the lake last weekend (and it looked mostly like dock parts to me)…….if we get a really nasty squall before the lake level recedes I would expect to see a lot more of that stuff based on my quick around-the-lake survey of docks, lifts and boats last Saturday.   There was some good news for some fun-loving members of the younger generation (i.e., Taylor Zachar and friends) who were able to get some of the best “rocket tubing” you will ever see over the outlet weir, down the stream and thru the culvert under South Shore Drive.  It’s best to keep in mind that whatever seems bad at Clear Lake right now pales in comparison to what’s happening in the farm fields between I-80 in Iowa and I-90 in Minnesota and the cities like Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Des Moines, Cedar Falls/Waterloo, Mason City and all the small towns in between.  Sadly, the northern half of Iowa now looks like the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota.

AT LEAST THERE WAS ENOUGH WATER (AND WIND) FOR THE ANNUAL DAD/MOM/LAD/LASS RACE……..in which all the participants are winners, but some of the winners place better than others in the final standings:

1.                  Chris and Maggie Long

2.                  Stu and Emily Oltrogge

3.                  Dan Allen and Brooks Gooding

4.                  Jamie and Sydney Zachar

5.                  Nancy and Drake Lundeen

6.                  Chris and Jacob Wessels

7.                  Tom and Aspen Lundeen

8.                  Trevor and AJ Hanus

A LITTLE HIGH WATER DIDN’T SLOW DOWN THE OPEN HOUSE/TACKY PARTY AT THE YACHT CLUB…….I couldn’t help but notice there is no shortage of “tackiness” among CLYC members or among people considering becoming CLYC members.  The food was tacky; the outfits were tacky; the décor was tacky; even some of the people were tacky.  It ranged from merely tacky bowling garb (Charlie MacNider), to tasteless T-Shirts (Steph Taylor) and body part displays (Andi Tisor) to the eminently tasteful (yet extraordinarily tacky) tan leisure suit and white platform shoes modeled proudly by yours truly.  Thanks much to Steph and Andi for putting it all together. We should do this again next year……because I’m certain we all have more stuff in our closets that is just crying to get out in public.

THE THURSDAY NIGHT RACING SERIES IS ALIVE AND WELL…..again this season.  So grab a sailing vessel of your choice each and every Thursday (weather permitting) and arrive in time for the 6:30 p.m. warning gun.  Your race committee this season will be Deb and Amy Tesar, and Julie Oltrogge

June 10, 2008

I leave town for one weekend, and all heck breaks loose.  Gale force winds, tornado near-misses, torrential rains and near-biblical flooding.  Our thoughts are with the folks in Mason City and some of the other areas of northern Iowa that are underwater…and yet without water and without homes.

THE WEATHER PLAYED HAVOC WITH THE LAST WEEKEND’S YACHT CLUB PARTY AND SILENT AUCTION……..I understand the guests who braved the weather ended up being steered to the shelter at the Girl Scout Camp.  As a result, both the partying and the bidding were a little “under the weather”.  So look for the silent auction to rise from the ashes at the next cocktail party scheduled for Saturday, June 28 at the Yacht Club building.

While we can redo the auction, we can’t really redo the party……but we can come close.  Those of you now find yourselves one behind on your summer party quota should plan to attend the Surf Ballroom’s 60th Anniversary Gala and Fundraiser on Friday, June 27, 2008 featuring John Mueller’s Winter Dance Party.  We’ve all grown up with the Surf and this will be an outstanding opportunity to give a little back while celebrating the rich history and significance of one of North Iowa’s greatest treasures.

THE FIRST FRIDAY NIGHT OPEN HOUSE IS……this Friday the 13th (of June) at the Yacht Club.  It’s the first one of the summer, so bring your friends, your enemies, your significant others and your insignificant others to enjoy an evening at the “club.”  Festivities run from 6:00-9:00 p.m.  The theme is a Tacky Party (so this is right up my alley).  Wear the tackiest clothing you can come up with and bring a tacky appetizer or food item to share (Cheez-Wiz, frozen pizza rolls, leftovers, etc. would be perfect).  Since this is also BYOB, you can also bring the tackiest beer, wine or other non-alcoholic beverage you can get your hands on.  Steph Taylor and Andi Tisor have promised to provide “inappropriate” (in a tacky sort of way) décor.  If you have any questions you can contact them at taylorslj@yahoo.com (Steph) or andi_tisor@msn.com (Andi).

THE ANNUAL DAD/MOM-LAD/LASS RACE IS THIS SUNDAY…..at 2:00 p.m. out on the lake.  As most of you know, this is that one day out of every 365 that parents are forced to acknowledge they aren’t better than the kids at some things. The older folks get to take the helm of the X Boats and must endure the snickers and rolled eyes of the younger crew members onboard.  Don’t miss out if you get the chance……….

SAILING SCHOOL’S FIRST SESSION BEGINS MONDAY, JUNE 16TH….The dock is finally in, as are the lifts and boats.  And in case you’ve forgotten to register, you can still get into this session if you call Margaret Osmundson at 357-5513 ahead of time.

C NATIONALS…is at Lake Geneva this weekend and I understand that Bill Nicholas and Mark Tesar will be representing Clear Lake while re-enacting the old days when Bill was skipper and Mark was crew…….except nowadays they are both skippers……so we wish them luck both the racing and with the onboard discussions.

June 3, 2008

Now that’s more like it!!  Almost felt like summer on Sunday, didn’t it?  And Saturday wasn’t too bad either.  The lake is even starting to warm up…..chest waders that were mandatory the week before while doing chores in the lake were merely optional this past weekend (although the chores themselves were not optional).  Dan Allen and his E Boat crew might disagree with may assessment of the water termp…..after their little tumble into the drink during the first race on Saturday afternoon.  The bottom line is that we all got in a full slate of sailing……with breezes just strong enough to generate new aches and pains in muscles unused since last season.  However, if you’re like me, and replenished your supply of ibuprofen, then you’re good to go…..I did hear that Mother Nature threw us a little “welcome back to the lake” affair last Thursday night with 50+ mph winds that wreaked some havoc on the east shore …..I don’t know how strong the wind has to be to overturn a C Boat and the lift it’s strapped to, but that’s how strong it was at Don Taylor’s place.

COCKTAIL PARTY/ SILENT AUCTION THIS WEEKEND……Saturday, June 7, Girl Scout Camp, starting at 6:30 p.m.   All Yacht Club members are invited. Social Members have the honors as far as hors d’oeuvres and beverage serving go.  And you can bid on the Sailing School’s silent auction items while you catch up on all your friends’ off-season exploits.  Did I mention there will be autographed Minnesota Twins memorabilia for you to bid on?

YEARBOOKS ARE OUT…..and if you don’t have yours you should be getting it any minute now.  Denni Erickson and her talented crew (including, but not limited to, Dawn Southwick and Val LaFrenz) have put together yet another top-notch piece of work.  Use it, enjoy it……and try to patronize those businesses that advertise in it.

WATCH THE GLOBE GAZETTE FOR A PIECE ON CLYC’S “ELDER STATESMEN”……Last Sunday the Globe Gazette gathered together some of the Yacht Club’s “old timer sailors” for some photos and interviews.  I have no idea when or what the Globe will be doing with it.  But, based on the amount of talking W.L. Nicholas and Gil Bovard were doing, the piece may have to be an entire section of the paper….possibly a special edition.

THE SAILING SCHOOL COUNTDOWN IS ON…..The Yacht Club building will be a pretty active place starting June 16, so, if you haven’t already done so, get your sailing school registrations in.

…..and that’s about all I have to say about that……..Later, Oz

May 28, 2008

Just admit it……Memorial Day snuck up on you, didn’t it?  I couldn’t help but notice there were quite a few boats sitting in driveways over the weekend in various stages of (un)preparedness.  And then you got lucky when Mother Nature bailed you out. She blew all of us off the lake on Saturday and the forecasters said she would do the same on Sunday…..that threat was enough to call off the Sunday races when the wind started building mid-morning.  Then, just as the wind unexpectedly calmed down, a big black storm cell marched out of the west…….and, fortunately for us (very, very unfortunately for Parkersburg), slipped off to the south and east. All of which made me ponder on a few deep mysteries…. Why did the storm siren go off only in downtown…..and why did it only blare once…..and why did all this happen only after the storm cell had already passed by the lake? I could have sworn those sirens were supposed to be warnings, not after-the-fact announcements……but then again what do I know…….

OK, now that we’re all really ready for the season to start………….

SAILING SCHOOL STARTS JUNE 16, SO REGISTER NOW……..Sailing School information and registration forms were sent out with the first newsletter of the season and also to past sailing school families.  If you misplaced them, go to the Yacht Club website (www.clyciowa.com), click on the “Sailing School” tab, then click on the “Registration” tab, print the form, fill it out….and send it in.  Forms should also be available at the Clear Lake Parks and Recreation office.  The Sailing School is trying to limit class sizes to a manageable number…..so the earlier you register, the better.

OOPS……NO OPEN HOUSE THIS SATURDAY…….The schedule we sent out earlier this year and the schedule on the website show an open house at the Yacht Club this Saturday, May 31 starting at 4:30 p.m.  Please ignore that part of the schedule…..there won’t be an open house this Saturday, but there will be one later this year and we will let you know once it is no longer a secret.

FIRST CLYC PARTY OF THE SEASON…..AND FIRST SAILING SCHOOL SILENT AUCTION EVER….is Saturday, June 7, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Girl Scout Camp.  Social Members get to bring the hors d’oeuvres (I love to write that word) of their choosing……and they always bring the best of the season.  Remember, the Yacht Club parties are open to ALL CLYC MEMBERS, so take advantage of them.

During the party, the Sailing School will be holding its first ever Silent Auction with some pretty cool items up for bid…..for example, how do 4 “box” tickets to an Iowa State Cyclone game grab you?  Bring some extra cash or checks so you can buy if you win…..because I’m sure IOUs won’t cut it.

MANY THANKS TO GERALD PETERSEN……..who showed up on Tuesday with some of his construction folks to do some repairs and maintenance work on the Yacht Club building and to extend the patio area.  It’s always nice to see members who are willing to step in when something is needed………..

DREDGING STARTS JUNE 1………in the “little lake”.  We have been assured that you can still boat to the Muskie for dinner and drinks.  However, take your time once you arrive in the little lake, because the speed limit will be 10mph.

May 21, 2008

Allow me to vent for just a moment, while I’m retrieving my snowmobile suit and long-johns from storage so I can be ready for some sailing this Memorial Day weekend.  Is it just me, or has the weather this spring gone beyond merely annoying?  In fact, as I write this, the weather outside is beautiful…….if this were the first week of April, for godsakes!!!!  But enough whining.  Let’s pretend it’s summer and get on with it.  Oh…..by the way, do icebergs on the race course count as obstructions under the sailing rules?

MEMORIAL DAY REGATTA……is this weekend, so look for back-to-back races on Saturday. I doubt that the water has warmed up very much, so it would be very helpful (and safe) for those of you with motorboats to get out there in case a few of us end up in the drink, because we haven’t touched a sailboat in 7 or 8 months.

BOARD MEETING…..is this Sunday, May 25, 1:00 p.m. at the Yacht Club

BLESSING OF THE BOATS……..This Saturday, May 24, from 1:00-3:00, you are invited to swing by City Dock in any boat of your choosing (sailboat, motorboat, canoe, kayak, you name it) and have your craft blessed as part of the kick-off of the boating season…..courtesy of the United Methodist Church.  If you do so, make sure you approach the dock as slowly as possible, so you can receive your blessing and then be off to enjoy the lake.  Heaven knows, my boats could use this……..especially on the way out to the first race of the season!!!

GET READY FOR THE SAILING SCHOOL’S FIRST SILENT AUCTION…….The Sailing School has lined up a cool, selective collection of items that you can bid on during the opening cocktail party on June 7 at the Girl Scout Camp. So be sure to bring your plastic, your checkbook or your cash with you that evening so you can get in on the action.

REGISTRATION…….If you haven’t already done so, now would be a good time to do your CLYC registration and your Sailing School registration.  The information and forms are all on the Yacht Club website, www.clyciowa.com, under the Membership page.

AMBER ALERT!!!.......Dan Allen informs us that his E-Boat (Z-11) has been newly configured with an asymmetrical spinnaker and bowsprit.  Apparently the new configuration drastically reduces visibility by all the crewmembers on the boat.  He wants all racers to be aware of this, so if you see him approaching make sure you hail his boat early so he knows where you are…….just to be sure.

PROTESTS MAY NEVER BE THE SAME…….I understand former Yacht Club member and Cougar Catamaran sailor Dave Baker was appointed to the Iowa Supreme Court this year.  Does this mean Protest Committee Chair Bill Nicholas will be offering him a position on the Committee?  If so, be prepared to have your protest heard by folks in black robes.

April 15, 2008

The ice went out, taxes are done, dock permits are approved (or not) and we’ve been on daylight savings time for a more than a month.  So why doesn’t it feel like spring yet???  Maybe it has something to do with the continuing weekly dump of 6 inches of slushy snow.

Well, ready or not, it’s time to think about summer, warm water and breezes…..and sailing.

So here are the attachments that will help you kick off another season (all this stuff is also on the  CLYC website, but sometimes it helps having it right in front of you):

CLYC Registration Form – You have choices here.  You can complete the attached registration and mail it to CLYC, PO Box 29, Clear Lake, IA 50428…..or you can print the same form off the CLYC website (www.clyciowa.com), complete it and mail it to the same address….or you can actually register online on the CLYC website (and save a few trees). The drop dead date for registration is May 10 when the yearbook gets printed, but earlier would be much, much better.  Also note that the form contains easy spots for you to donate to the Sailing School and to Friends of Clear Lake.

CLYC Schedule – So you can fill your calendar with events, parties, sailboat races and board meetings.

Sailing School Information Sheet – Chock full of everything you need to know about this season’s sailing school.

Sailing School Registration – You have choices here, too.  You can complete the attached form and mail it to CLYCSS, PO Box 29, Clear Lake, IA 50428 or you can print the same form off the website and mail it to the same address.  We don’t have online registration for the Sailing School.

WELCOME YOUR NEW YACHT CLUB OFFICERS………Brian Edison is this year’s Commodore, Dave Miller is Vice Commodore, and Marcus Lundberg is our new Secretary/Treasurer.  I think you’re in good hands…….

YACHT CLUB SPRING CLEANING…..is this Saturday, April 19, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. or so.  As is our custom, we are doing our part to show our support for Earth Day…..so please help if you can.

MEMORIAL DAY REGATTA IS EARLY THIS YEAR……..While we don’t have tune-up races anymore, the Memorial Day Regatta will feel like it, because it’s May 24-25 this year……..so be prepared.

WE HAVE A NEW BATCH OF FLEET CAPTAINS THIS SEASON……and you may want to review the list to see if you are one of the lucky ones elected by your peers (or by some other mysterious method):

            X Fleet                         Captain Emily Oltrogge
            MC Fleet                     Captain Stuart Oltrogge
            C Fleet                         Captain Steve Swift
            E Fleet                         Captains Jamie/Lori Zachar
            A Fleet                         Captain Russ Schurtz
            Hobie Fleet                  Captain Bill Wilson

For the rest of us who are not so honored, we should remember to smartly salute these folks whenever we get the opportunity.

I’m going to leave you now and chip some ice off my boat………..

Later, OZ
