Sept 3, 2009

It’s about time to wrap up another season.   The summer that wasn’t almost isn’t anymore.  Hope you all had fun last weekend racing in long underwear, stocking caps and snowmobile suits.

LABOR DAY REGATTA…….is this weekend.  For some, it may be the last chance for some racing hardware, even if it’s only the Juno Cup for last place in the last race.

THE YEAR-END BANQUET….is Sunday, September 6 at the Yacht Club.  Dinner will be catered by WE 3 and will start at 5:30 p.m.  The awards ceremony, the crowning of next year’s Commodore and the unveiling of the Board’s choice for the 2011 Commodore will all take place starting about 6:30…..so don’t miss it.

PLANS ARE IN THE WORKS FOR A 2010 YACHT CLUB/ SAILING SCHOOL CALENDAR……that will include all the information (and more) you need to know about CLYC and Sailing School racing, instruction, party, etc. schedules.  The goal is to have calendars ready for sale before the end of this year.

Dan Allen has taken this bull by the horns and is under the gun time-wise.  He needs your old sailing pictures, party pictures, anything you can cram on a CD and get to him quickly, so he can figure out what to incorporate in the calendar.  You can send your CD to Dan at 7 East Gate Ct., Clear Lake, IA 50428……or contact him at dsallen@netins.net........or talk with him at the Year-End Banquet.

WE’RE STILL LOOKING FOR……….

August 27, 2009

Wow!  Last weekend was more like what we’ve been pining for.  The weather was beautiful, the racing was nice.  The only buzz-kill is that we have just two weekends left in the regular season. C’est la vie……..

THE OFT-DELAYED DAD/MOM/LAD/LASS RACE……did actually happen last Sunday……and it was worth the wait.  There were 10 (count’em 10) X Boats careening around the race course, many of them manned by various members of the Broghammer family.  That is an outstanding turnout.  Thanks to all the skippers who took the time and made the effort, and thanks to all the crews for putting up with the skippers.  And the winners are:

                                    1.         Z-23                Stuart and Emily Oltrogge
                                    2.         Z-33                Drake Lundeen/Brooks Gooding
                                    3.         Z-7                  Nancy and Aspen Lundeen
                                    4.         Z-1                  Ken and AJ Hanus
                                    5.         Z-6                  Jamie and Katie Zachar
                                    6.         Z-4                  John and Megan Vratsinas
                                    7.         Z-11                Chris and Maggie Long
                                    8.         M-7                 Sharon and Ben Miller
                                    9.         Z-4                  Matt and Sarah Broghammer
                                    10.       Z-11                Scott and Henry Long

BOARD MEETING THIS WEEKEND……Sunday, Aug. 30, 1:00 p.m. at the Yacht Club.  The Sailing School has extended a sincere invitation to the board members to hang around after the meeting and help pull the Sailing School boats. It doesn’t take long and you know what they say, “Many hands make more work for everyone” or something like that……….

THE YEAR-END BANQUET……..            will be Sunday, Sept. 6.  The Commodore has not declared a time yet, but has promised that WE 3 will do the catering.

DON’T FORGET………

Blooper Award Nominations:  to Stu Oltrogge at oltrogge@clyciowa.com

Traveling Trophies:     to Jeff Nicholas (357-2630 or jnichls@netins.net

Vintage Photos:          to Denni Erickson (357-7342 or ericksn1@netins.net

August 20, 2009

It might not feel like it, but we still have 3 weekends of club racing left this season.  I wouldn’t go so far to say Mother Nature smiled on us last weekend……it was more of a sneering grin……..but we did get all of our races in during some pretty windy conditions.  I couldn’t help but notice that fewer boats were hitting the starting line, and assume it is (a) the younger sailors are back at school, (b) many have lost faith in having decent racing weather ever again, (c) something else, or (d) all of the above.

THE ANNUAL DAD/MOM/LAD/LASS RACE………is this Sunday, August 23 at 1:00 p.m.   As we reported last week, let’s hope that third time is a charm.

WE HAVE A (NEAR) WINNER……….Mark Tesar represented the CLYC MC Fleet at last week’s ILYA Championships in Green Lake, Wisconsin and brought home hardware for 2nd place overall, after winning one of the 3 races.  I don’t have many details, but I hear that Green Lake was suffering from the same affliction we have experienced this summer.  The first day of the three day regatta was blowing 30mph, the second day blew zero, and the third day was enough breeze to cram in all of the races.  Congrats, Mark.

TIME TO START CONSIDERING BLOOPER NOMINATIONS…….and to submit them to Stu Oltrogge at Oltrogge@clyciowa.com.  I was asked the other day if you can nominate yourself for the Blooper Award.  I believe you can…but…..it seems to me that nominating yourself for such an award would itself be a blooper.  That’s why it’s important to think of dumb things other people did during the last year.

DIE HARD REGATTA…one of the classic end-of season regattas is coming up in mid-September.  Attached to this newsletter is information and an entry form.

REMEMBER TO START GATHERING UP YOUR CLYC TRAVELING TROPHIES….so they can be reissued at the Year End Banquet on September 6.  Contact Jeff Nicholas (357-2630 or jnichls@netins.net) so deliver them to him.

AND REMEMBER TO GATHER UP YOUR VINTAGE CLYC-RELATED PHOTOS….so Denni Erickson can start figuring out which ones to put in the yearbook next year to help celebrate the Yacht Club’s 75th anniversary.

August 13, 2009

Another non-sailing weekend, except for the 3 C Boats that went out in Saturday morning’s blow.  It’s getting so bad, that Sunday morning the radar clearly showed a big orange and yellow storm blob bearing down on Clear Lake from the west…….which caused the races to be cancelled……and then, by some mysterious quirk of nature, the storm skips over the lake and then reforms itself just east of the lake.  What is that all about??!!

WE MAY NOT SAIL MUCH, BUT BY GOD WE CAN PARTY……thanks to Pam Little for letting us all invade her home and her neighbor’s deck for last Saturday’s Yacht Club party.

X BLUE CHIP REGATTA REPORT……Emily Oltrogge returned from sailing at Cedar Lake, Wisconsin with the 30 best X Boaters in the land, carrying a 17th place trophy.  Well, actually, I’m not sure about the trophy; but I am sure about the 17th.  That is a very fine finish on a lake where you can go from first to last to first and back again all in the span of 10 minutes. Congrats Emily.

THIRD TIME’S A CHARM??.......The twice-cancelled Dad/Mom/Lad/Lass race is now rescheduled for Sunday, August 23, at 1:00 p.m.  All you dads, moms, etc. who will be sailing have now had an entire summer to practice, so we are expecting nothing less than a tremendous display of sailboat racing skills…….not.  Because this is the summer of 2009, odds are the weather will not cooperate in any way, shape or form.  If that happens, we plan on rescheduling during iceboat season!!

DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE ANNUAL PICNIC THIS FRIDAY EVENING…..for the Association for the Preservation of Clear Lake. Details and signup forms were in last week’s newsletter.

DID YOU KNOW??......We were looking at the 1st place C Fleet trophy that Bill Nicholas won at Interlakes two weeks ago (for the second time after his 1995 win) and noticed that “Bill and Bonnie Nicholas” also won it twice in 1948 and 1951, sailing “Two Bees and a Honey.”  Just gives you warm and fuzzies, doesn’t it?

WANTED…..SAILING SCHOOL PROGRAM DIRECTOR FOR 2010……This year’s sailing school sessions are all complete, but the Clear Lake Yacht Club Sailing School is already accepting applications for the position of Program Director for the summer of 2010.  The Program Director reports to the Board of Directors and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Sailing School, including collecting and organizing registrations, establishing instructor work schedules, supervising instructors, and responding to “customers.”  The successful candidate will be organized with good people skills. Prior sailing school instruction or sailing experience is not required, but is a plus.  For more information, please contact Mark Tesar at 641-357-8642 or mtesar@netins.net

Hmmmm….maybe I’ll apply.  Hope they aren’t serious about the “being organized” part.

Later, Oz

August 5, 2009

I believe we have turned into San Diego, although no doubt Mexico is a lot further away.  70’s during the day and 50’s during the night.  That’s really not a bad thing, I guess, but it’s not what I look forward to in January and February………I dream about good old fashioned heat!!

YACHT CLUB PARTY……..is this Saturday, August 8, 6:30 p.m., at Pam Little’s home, 1609 North Shore Drive.  As usual all CLYC members, sailing and social, are invited. E’s, C’s and Board Members have honors on the hors d’oeuvres and beverage service.

ASSOCIATION FOR THE PRESERVATION OF CLEAR LAKE PICNIC……is Friday, August 14, 6:00 p.m. at the State Park Shelter.  There will be updates on the various Clear Lake restoration projects, including the dredging in Ventura Bay, zebra mussels, the Ventura marsh project, etc.  This is a can-do organization with a great mission (which you can discern just by looking at its name) and it’s headed this year by our own Mark Ebeling…….if there is one picnic you make it to this year, this is the one.  Attached to this Crow’s Nest is a picnic reservation form and a membership form.

INTERLAKES REPORT……..The Interlakes Regatta held at White Bear Lake last weekend had a little of everything.  Winds were light, medium and howling.  The lake level was down 4 feet causing the sailors to play dodge ‘em with rather large patches of weeds.  There was a retro feel about the whole event……boats were put in and taken out at the old Boat Works (just like 3 decades ago),  the starting sequence was the old yellow, blue, red flag program (just like a decade ago), Bill Nicholas had his “old” crew, Mike Fieseler, on board (just like 2 decades ago), and the golfing members of the White Bear Yacht Club finally allowed the sailors to hold a party in the 100 year old WBYC building (just like uncountable decades ago).  As promised, your Clear Lake sailors returned with hardware:  Bill Nicholas grabbed 1st place individual honors in the C Fleet after winning two races,  Mike Risewick took 3rd overall in the MC Fleet, Emily Oltrogge finished 4th in the X Fleet, and the MC Team won the team trophy for the 3 rd year in a row (with Clear Lake MCers winning 3 of the 4 races……and with 4 of the 5 team members all finishing in the top 10).  Not a bad weekend of racing and social get-togethers.

GOOD LUCK TO EMILY OLTROGGE…….who is sailing the X Blue Chip Regatta this weekend at tiny, fluky, scary Cedar Lake.

E BOATERS ALERT……..E Boaters check your trophy cases. If you have the Interlakes 1st place E Team Trophy, let me know right away.  It’s a big 10 inch deep silver bowl that says “Star Journal” on it.  The E Fleet won the trophy in 2006 when Interlakes was last at Clear Lake and the traveling trophy never got returned.  You might want to look around your kitchen countertops as well, since the trophy would be ideal for storing chips or Cheeto’s.

CLEAR LAKE YACHT CLUB’S 75TH ANNIVERSARY IS NEXT YEAR…….and Denni Erickson is looking for vintage photos to be included in the 2010 CLYC yearbook.  They don’t necessarily have to be sailing photos……lake scenes and family shots are welcome.  Try and include dates and names with the photos you submit.  You can either email them to Denni (ericksn1@netins.net) or bring them to her to scan.

July 30, 2009

Mother Nature continues to play games with us.  About 1 out of every 5 days feels like summer….and that one day does not necessarily fall on the weekend.

The following is some delayed reporting from my week away from the newsroom:

JACK MACNIDER MEMORIAL REGATTA RESULTS:

         E Fleet                                                                  Hobie Fleet

1.       Z-5    Mike Lundberg                                       1.   63059    Bill Wilson

2.       Z-6    Jamie/Lori Zachar                                  2.   5931      Mike Pruchnicki

3.       Z-24  Bob Swanson

4.       Z-17  John Vratsinas

X Fleet                                                                  MC Fleet

1.       Z-23   Emily Oltrogge                                       1.   2340   Stu Oltrogge (tie)

2.       Z-11   Maggie Long                                           1.   2401   Todd Tesar (tie)

3.       Z-33   Brooks Gooding                                    3.   2178   Mark Tesar

4.       Z-7     Aspen Lundeen                                     4.   2484   Mike Risewick

5.       Z-1     Hanus/DiMarco (tie)                           5.   1764   Randy Kotz

6.       Z-6     Katie Zachar (tie)

MC INVITATIONAL REGATTA FOLLOWUP…….As expected, I neglected to cite a few of the volunteers who gave their time and energy to make the MC Invite a success.  John Fieseler and Margaret MacNider toiled as members of the lunchtime grill crew keeping us all happy…..and full.  I’m sure there are others I have overlooked…..believe me it’s not out ofspite, it’s only out of ignorance.

ON TO MORE CURRENT STUFF………..

X INLANDS…….were held last weekend in Gull Lake, Minnesota.  Clear Lake was represented by four members of our X Boat fleet:  Brooks Gooding, Maggie Long, Aspen Lundeen and Emily Oltrogge.  I hear the second day was a good old fashioned Clear Lake style day, with 4 races in winds blowing from 17-22 mph.  The X Boaters all came home with a wealth of new experience after sailing in the 65 boat Senior X Fleet………and Emily even came home with a 16th place and an invitation to the X Blue Chip.  Congrats girls and guy.

NO TEARS OPTIMIST REGATTA…….was yesterday at Clear Lake.  Winds were light, but all 15 Opti’s got in 3 races and appeared to have had a great time.  I’m not certain of the results because I was having a hard time seeing the sailors thru all the spectator boats.

EARLY PARTY NOTICE……The last regular Yacht Club party of the season is scheduled for Saturday, August 8, at Pam Little’s abode (1609 North Shore Drive).  C’s, E’s and Board Members have the honors for goodies and beverage serving.

INTERLAKES REGATTA……is this weekend at White Bear Lake, so good luck to the Clear Lake teams that will be attending and hopefully returning with some hardware.

July 16, 2009

We’re just coming off a nice MC Invitational regatta weekend.  40 boats hit the line in what turned out to be a 5 race regatta in some pretty strange winds.  Clear Lake was well-represented on the course, and managed to sneak 2 boats into the top 10 and another 7 boats into the top 20.  Before we get to regatta volunteer thank-you’s, we need to attend to some business.

THE RESCHEDULED DAD/MOM/LAD/LASS RACE…….is this Sunday, July 19, at 2:00 p.m. sharp.  The designated skippers (whether they be parents, siblings, friends, enemies or other hangers-on) have had an extra 3 weeks to practice their X Boat sailing skills…..which I’m certain will be evident throughout the race.

NOW FOR THE REGATTA THANK YOU’S FROM CO-CHAIRS MARGARET OZ AND JOANNE NICHOLAS……….

Rave reviews for the regatta, the Clear Lake Yacht Club and its members, the Outing Club and its members…….pretty much everything in general.

All the folks we forgot to name but who still showed up and pitched in in all kinds of way.

As you can see, the list is almost endless.  The CLYC should be proud once again.  The racers who were first timers at Clear Lake said there was no way they would not be back. And those racers who were regulars were reminded why they keep coming back.

July 8, 2009

All in all, a very nice 4th of July weekend.  I don’t think the weather screwed up much of anything, including the parade, the fireworks (were there really 7 barges?), the carnie, the parties, the sailing, etc., etc., etc.

COMBINED CLYC AND MC INVITATIONAL PARTY……is this Saturday, July 11, about 6:30 p.m. at the Outing Club.  As usual, all members are invited, and you can get a chance to meet and greet the MCers who are visiting for the Invitational Regatta. Even though this is combined with the regatta there is no need to pre-register or pay……just show up.  The MCs and Hobies are in charge of hors d’oeuvres and beverages….and they need to bring a lot to cover for the extra regatta guests.

THE MC INVITATIONAL REGATTA……is this weekend, July 10-12, at Clear Lake, and regatta co-chairs Margaret Oz and Joanne Nicholas are still expecting 40+ boats.  Races start Friday morning at 10:00 and run in the mornings and afternoons all weekend until the last race on Sunday morning.

As always we need spectator and chase boats, especially on Friday, July 10, when much of the world is slaving away at work.  Contact Margaret Oz (inremoz@aol.com or 357-5513) if you can help out.  Also you can just swing by the Yacht Club dock before races to see if anyone is standing there looking for a ride.

If you want to take part in the Friday evening dinner (chicken dinner at the Yacht Club plus a trip to City Park for the Bicycle, Blues and BBQ Festival) or any of the lunches, you need to purchase tickets during regatta registration (Thursday, July 9, from 4:00-8:00 p.m.) at the Yacht Club building.

Finally, if you would like a chance to crew on one of the MCs that are racing in the regatta, you can contact Margaret Oz…..or there will probably be a crew sheet posted at the Yacht Club that you can put your name on.....or maybe just hang around the Yacht Club looking “needy” until someone notices you.

INTERLAKES REGATTA……is at White Bear Lake in about 3 weeks.  E, C, MC, and X Fleet Captains should have received fleet registration forms and will be receiving a list of qualifiers for the regatta from each fleet.  Then you can run down the list to see who will be attending.  This year the Interlakes Board has decided that each fleet from a lake can field more than one team, if they have enough boats to do so.  So, if you’re the 6th or 7th place qualifier in your fleet, get on the phone and create your own team for the regatta.

Later, Oz

July 1, 2009

Mother Nature is playing dirty.  Two solid days of 25+ mph winds is not good for anybody……except possibly windsurfers and wind farms.   Of course, this probably means we will have awesome sailing conditions this weekend………and will have the opportunity to share it with a couple thousand motorboats on Saturday and Sunday.

REVISED 4TH OF JULY REGATTA SCHEDULE………In an effort to avoid excessive motorboat chop this year, allow people to see the parade, and to accommodate post-parade get-togethers, the mucky-mucks have decided to change this weekend’s regatta schedule a bit.  There will be no Saturday morning races.  The Saturday afternoon race is for all fleets and it’s scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. (note the different starting time).  Sunday morning races for all fleets will start a little earlier than usual….9:30 a.m……and the plan is to sail back-to-backs then.  Remember, this is also the last weekend of qualifying for the Interlake Regatta to be held at White Bear Lake this year.

LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE LAST WEEKEND THE DAD/LAD/ETC./ETC./ETC/ RACE…….was blown off the lake.  It is being rescheduled to  Sunday July 19 at 2:00 p.m.  I’ve got to believe all the parents will fill the extra two weeks with lots and lots of tiller time, honing their sailing and racing skills to a fine edge………or not.

MC INVITATIONAL……..is just a week and a half away.  The first race is at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 10, and races will be going on thru Sunday morning, July 12. Clear Lake is hosting the event and regatta co chairs, Margaret Oz and Joanne Nicholas, are expecting 40-50 boats from all over the Midwest……I hear there is even a Florida boat making the trip.

We really, really need spectator and chase boats…..and we need them the most on Friday, the 17th.  Please let Margaret Oz know if you can help out (357-5513 or inremoz@aol.com).  If you do head out in your boat on Friday, Saturday or Sunday to watch, please stop by the Yacht Club dock to check for crews and spectators who might be trying to hitch a ride.

As for the “events” that are part of the regatta……Friday evening, July 10, 6:30 p.m. is chicken dinner at the CLYC Building, then over to the park for the Bicycle, Blues and BBQ extravaganza ($18).  Lunches at the club each day ($8).  You have to buy tickets for lunches and the Friday night event on Thursday, July 9, during registration (4:00-8:00 p.m.)  You don’t have to pre-register for the Saturday night, July 11, event because we are combining the Yacht Club party at the Outing Club with the MC Invite party. MCs and Hobies are in charge of hors d’oeuvres (so make a lot).

June 24, 2009

It must be summer.  The rain during Sunday’s back-to-back races wasn’t even cold!!

THE FIRST FAMILY FUN NIGHT OF THE SEASON…….is this Friday evening, June 26, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Yacht Club.  It’s sponsored by the Sailing School, and is a great opportunity for the kids to show off to their families and friends what they’ve been learning in Sailing School.  Grills will be available.  So bring something to grill and a dish to share and whatever you would like to drink.

THE ANNUAL DAD/MOM/LAD/LASS/BROTHER/SISTER/HUSBAND/WIFE/FRIEND/FOE RACE….is this Sunday, June 28 at 2:00 p.m.  Get out on the lake and watch just how ridiculous parents can be when they try to race their kids’ X Boats.  It’s also Stu Oltrogge’s last chance to regain his winning form in this event.  If you are interested in racing in this premier event and want to use a Sailing School boat, please call Ellison Schurtz at 357-8001 as early as possible so she can help get it arranged.

NEWS FLASH!!!....MC FLEET INVITES C FLEET MEMBERS TO ITS FLEET PARTY……this Saturday, June 27th, 6:00 p.m. at Risewick’s, 1715 North Shore Drive.  But you C Fleet members have the same responsibilities as the MCers.  Sandwiches and beverages will be provided.  However, you need to bring a side dish or dessert……and contact Mike Risewick (mrisewick@libertybankiowa.com or musailor@gmail.com) letting him know what you’re bringing.  You’ve also gotta bring along old, humorous sailing photos to be let in to the festivities.

MC INVITATIONAL EARLY REGISTRATION DEADLINE………is this Friday, June 26th.  Just go to the ILYA link on the CLYC website or go directly to www.ilya.org and get signed up early…..because it’s cheaper if you do so.

BOARD MEETING……is this Saturday, June 27, 4:00 p.m. at our house, 507 South Shore Drive.  Come and check out the new road and driveway we had the City put in just for this meeting.

June 17, 2009

At least last weekend began to feel more like summer.  Sadly, it also felt like that part of summer where there’s no wind.  The Saturday morning races concluded just in time for the breeze to fall to a whisper……..until it freshened up late Sunday afternoon……a day late and a dollar short.  Conspiracy theorists could have a field day with the way the racing schedule has developed the last two weekends…..but I think it’s just Mother Nature showing us once again who’s boss.

LAST WEEKEND’S YACHT CLUB PARTY…….went off without a hitch.  Thanks to the Board Members and X Boat Parents for being gracious hosts and attempting to outdo the Social Members.  It was a valiant attempt, but unfortunately just another case of tugging on Superman’s cape.

MC INVITATIONAL VOLUNTEERS……are lining up to help when all the MCs start showing up July 9 for three days of racing.  Julie Oltrogge is the volunteer coordinator for the regatta and she needs help with such things as registration, lunches, evening parties, taxi and spectator boats.  You can be ahead of the curve and contact Julie (357-8957 or Oltrogge@clyciowa.com) or you can wait for her to contact you.  Even if you’ve never done what you’re volunteering for, you will find that it’s not really very hard and your co-volunteers can be very helpful…..and fun.

THURSDAY EVENING RACES ARE BACK ON…….this season, beginning this Thursday, June 18.  There will be a 6:30 p.m. warning gun and all fleets are invited to attend, sharpen your racing skills and have a little fun at the same time.

C NATIONALS………are this weekend at Lake Pewaukee in Wisconsin.  Mark Tesar and Bill Nicholas will be carrying the CLYC flag there…….so wish them luck.

MC FLEET PARTY……..Fleet Captain Mike Risewick has decided to set a record for the earliest CLYC MC Fleet Party in recorded or unrecorded history.  Usually these get-togethers are crammed into the end-of-summer rush…….but Mike is a proactive kind of guy.  So, MC sailors, mark your calendars for Saturday, June 27th, 6:00 p.m. at the Risewick residence, 1715 North Shore Drive.  Mike says you’re supposed to dress casual….DUH!  Sandwiches (including pulled pork) and beverages will be supplied by the Fleet Captain.  However, party-goers should bring side dishes or desserts (email Mike at mrisewick@libertybankiowa.com or musailor@gmail.com so he can coordinate those delicacies….and make sure that everyone isn’t bringing baked beans).  Fleet members are also required to bring old (and preferably humorous….although that might be redundant) sailing photos of themselves or others to share with the crowd.

AND FINALLY……..Margaret Oz is wondering whether someone has a “duster thingee” she can borrow for a very short time. It has to be long enough to reach the ceiling fan in the Yacht Club building (15 or 20 feet?) so she can clean the blades.  She is concerned that large chunks of accumulated dust (or worse) may suddenly cascade down upon the heads of some unsuspecting group that is renting the building for an event.  It’s probably not so much a liability issue as it is a yecccchhhhh issue.

AND REALLY FINALLY……There has been a groundswell of interest in a possible Yacht Club golf tourney.  If you are one of those who might be interested in such an event, let Mike Risewick know (his email addresses are a couple paragraphs above).

June 10, 2009

Only ducks and geese could have enjoyed this past weekend.   And, as far as I know, they don’t race sailboats.  We do………but we didn’t.

YACHT CLUB PARTY THIS SATURDAY…….June 13, 6:30 p.m. at the Yacht Club building.  Your hosts will be CLYC Board Members and X Boat Parents.  Every single CLYC member is invited.  But remember, this is BYOB, and if you feel the need to partake of something stronger than soda pop, you can only bring beer or wine……not hard stuff.

MC SAILORS………Clear Lake is hosting the MC Invitational and it’s only 4 weeks away.   So far 9 Clear Lake boats have pre-registered.  I know there are more of you who plan to register……..so why not do so now?  Registering on-line on the ILYA website is easy…..and fun.

MEMORIAL DAY REGATTA RESULTS……….OK, so these results are a couple weeks late.  But these sailors deserve the recognition………and I have newsletter space that needs to be filled:

June 3, 2009

The wind was supposed to howl all last weekend, but it only did so Saturday afternoon, which appeared to make all the Hobie sailors participating in the Don Coe Memorial Regatta happy.  The scow sailors did get in some decent racing on Saturday and Sunday morning, although the choice few who capsized might argue with that [Does anyone know whether Nancy Protzman has stopped shivering yet after her husband unceremoniously death-rolled at the windward mark on Sunday?] The most repeated trivia question of the weekend was:  when was the last time the Yacht Club held club races in the “little” end of the lake???  I think it might have been before I had my drivers license……..back when GTOs were the cool ride.

WE DID LEARN ONE THING LAST WEEKEND……………Every CLYC Party should probably be held at the MacNiders and every CLYC Party should probably be hosted by the Social Members.  Thanks to both for making it a very nice “kick off” for the summer.

FOR THOSE WHO MISSED THE FESTIVITIES………..and for those who want to try it again, the next Yacht Club party is Saturday, June 13, 6:30 p.m. at the Yacht Club Building, and Board Members and X Boat Parents will be doing the hosting.

CY-HAWK CHALLENGE WRAP UP………Last weekend’s party featured the first ever Cy-Hawk Challenge to benefit the Sailing School.  The Hawkeye fans decided to let the Cyclone fans win something this year…………and this was it.  And now a word from our sponsor:

“On behalf of the Sailing School board, I want to thank everyone that participated in the Cy-Hawk Challenge fund raiser for the Sailing School.  It was a fun event and we raised $2,014.00 for the Sailing School.  I hope everyone enjoyed it and did not take it too seriously, after all the big winner was the Sailing School.  The board would also like to give a big “Thank You” to everyone that donated to the Sailing School prior to Saturday night.  So far this year, $8,519.00 has been donated to the Sailing School (counting the Challenge).

You might be asking why the Sailing School needs donations.  The short answer is that the board is committed to keeping the sailing school fees as low as possible for the students, so the tuition is not enough to cover the fixed expenses such as insurance, boat storage and maintenance, hoist installation, etc. This is why the Sailing School board is continuing to look for new ways to raise donations, such as the auction last year and the Cy-Hawk Challenge this year. We have some other ideas that we will be working on for next year.

Given the response from the Cy-Hawk Challenge, we likely will do it again, but we will announce it a the beginning of the season.  In the meantime, thank you to everyone for your support.”

            Mark Tesar,  CLYCSS President

            “Go State”

A NEW WEATHER STATION HAS BEEN INSTALLED AT THE YACHT CLUB….

The best way to view it is go to the CLYC Web Site (www.clyciowa.com) and click on the space at the upper right corner of the Home Page.  Or you can type the link into your web browser (http://www.weatherlink.com/user/clyciowa/).

May 26, 2009

My bad……..I just couldn’t handle the fact that last weekend was Memorial Day weekend, so I didn’t send out my usual pre-Memorial Day newsletter.  It’s not that big of a deal.  I would have warned about the nasty weather that Memorial Day weekend usually brings and I would have warned people to be prepared for the Memorial Day Regatta.  And I would have been completely wrong about the weather warning…….because the weather was outstanding for the most part (a little rain Saturday morning didn’t even change that).   And my regatta warning was completely unnecessary….. because the sailors showed up in droves to test just how rusty their skills had become over the winter months.  Now that all that is behind us let’s have a party.

THE FIRST YACHT CLUB PARTY OF THE SEASON……..is this Saturday, May 30, 6:30 p.m. at Kathy MacNider’s (oh yeah…..and Charlie lives there too), 441 North Shore Drive.  All CLYC members are invited.  And the Social Members have the honors….meaning they get to bring their famous hors d’oeuvres and beverage-serving skills.

The CLYC Sailing School Cy-Hawk Challenge will be unveiled at the party.  The Sailing School would like to invite your to show your support of the Sailing School and your college of choice between the University of Iowa and Iowa State University.  During the party on Saturday, May 30, you will be able to donate to the Sailing School on behalf of your school.  In honor of the school that collects the most donations, that school’s flag will be flown at the Yacht Club during the Yacht Club party to be held Saturday, June 13.  If you can’t make the May 30 party, you can still send in your donation/vote on behalf of your school to CLYCSS, PO Box 29, Clear Lake, IA 50428.  So, let’s have some fun, help the Sailing School, and find out which university has the best fans………….

NEW LOCATION FOR THIS WEEKEND’S RACES……The May 30-31 races for all fleets (except Hobies) will be in the west end of the lake, in order to make room for the Hobie Regatta being held in the main lake.  For many of us, that means leaving the dock more than 15 minutes before the preparatory gun……..you have been warned !!!

CLYC YEARBOOKS ARE OUT….and I believe most all of them have been delivered.  They are chock full of invaluable information and advertisements for your local (and some not-so-local) merchants.  Denni Erickson and Dawn Southwick again deserve your raucous applause for their annual marathon effort of putting this whole thing together in time for Memorial Day.

CLEAR LAKE MC SAILORS……..Register right now for the MC Invitational Regatta we are hosting at Clear Lake on July 9-12.  It’s a lot easier to attract out-of-town sailors if they see a boatload of sailors already signed up for the regatta.  Ignore your animal urge to be a procrastinator and do it as soon as you finish this sentence.  Go to ilya.org, click on the “Racing” link, then click on the “ILYA Regatta Registration” link and git er dun.

Also, in an effort to attract more sailors by making this an affordable experience, we want to offer all the off-lake participants a home to stay in.  If you race an MC, please try to make your abode available that weekend to an off-lake sailor (or maybe two).  Actually, any CLYC member can do this…….but the real pressure is (appropriately) on the CLYC MC sailors to step up to the plate.  Please contact Margaret Osmundson at 641-357-5513 or inremoz@aol.com and let her know that you can handle the pressure……and host a sailor or two over that weekend.

MEMORIAL DAY IS ALSO AN APPROPRIATE TIME…….to remember CLYC members who we’ve lost.  Our thoughts and prayers are with Bud Toepfer and Chuck Wilmarth and their families.  I hear that the sailing is always better where they are now.

I’m sure there’s more important stuff I should be including in this issue, but my editor is antsy to get this week’s edition of the newsletter out the door.

April 14, 2009

Well, the world looks a bit different than it did at the end of last season when the last Crow’s Nest came out.  We’ve got fewer banks, brokers, insurance companies, retailers, car dealers and a whole host of other businesses; we’ve got a new president; Minnesota might have a new senator (can you say Saturday Night Live?)……….but some things don’t really change; the ice goes out, soft water reappears, docks and lifts go in, boats come out of storage, and another sailing season arrives. Sigh………….

Oh yeah…….and it’s time to sign up for stuff.  That’s why you will find lots of attachments with this newsletter (kind of like the tax forms you just got done with):

CLYC Membership Registration Form – This has to be in by May 10, no ifs, ands or buts about it.  There are lots of ways to do this.  You can complete and submit the form attached to this newsletter to CLYC, PO Box 29, Clear Lake, IA 50428 and include a check……….You can print the same form from the CLYC website (www.clyciowa.com) under the “Membership Info” tab and do the same thing with it…………or you can actually register online on the CLYC website and pay by the almighty credit card.

Sailing School Information Sheet – everything you ever wanted to know about the 2009 Sailing School sessions but were afraid to ask.

Sailing School Registration Form – Like the CLYC registration, you can complete and submit the form attached to this newsletter to the PO Box 29 address……..or you can print the same form off of the CLYC website under the “Sailing School” tab and mail it to the PO Box 29 address.  Unlike the CLYC registration you can’t register online.

DID YOU HEAR?....................The Clear Lake Yacht Club was awarded “One Design Club of the Year” by the U.S. Sailing Association.  The award announcement focused on the fact that we are completely a volunteer group, with lots of successful one-design sailing classes, a hot shot sailing school, fun social events……..and we do it all in the middle of Iowa fly-over country.  So, you can all pat yourselves on the back….and keep it up!!

YACHT CLUB BUILDING SPRING CLEANING………is Saturday, April 25 from 10:00 to noon (or whenever we get it finished).  There should be cleaning supplies, so you just have to bring yourself.  Because this is also Earth Day, we will be cleaning up some of the City ground around our building to do our part.  Please come and help us kick off early summer.

AND HERE’S THE TEASER………There’s lots more news that’s fit to print………..but I’ll save it for the next newsletter so you can hold your breath until it comes out in a couple weeks.

IN THE MEANTIME……..I’m waiting for my bailout money so I can get new boat stuff…………
