August 18,2016

Last weekend, Mother Nature rolled out her “Chamber of Commerce” weather, and we had some nice racing. Unfortunately, the breezes kind of croaked Sunday afternoon for the E fleet. Well, it’s not the end of the season yet, but I can see it from here.

LAST REGULAR PARTY OF THE SEASON…..is this Saturday, August 20, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Shawn Sabin and Paul Barnd’s new place, 1909 South Shore Drive. Hors d’oeuvres duty belongs to the MC, M17 and Hobie fleets. Because some of the MCs are at the ILYA Championships, we’re asking that other CLYC members who plan on attending consider bringing a bit of food so we don’t run short.

THE BIG INLAND ILYA CHAMPIONSHIPS….is at Lake Geneva this week. I know Mark Tesar, Stu Oltrogge and Emily Oltrogge are heading there to represent Clear Lake……….and we wish them good luck.

REGATTA REPORTS……It’s been a busy few weeks for regattas, so it’s time to catch up on what happened.

Opti Championships……..that were held right here in our back yard saw Clear Lake’s younger sailors well represented, with Billy Starbeck and Libby Anderson in the more senior Red, White and Blue Fleet consisting of 57 boats and with Danny Starbeck, Benny Gerbus, Michael Takacs, Leif Lundberg, Finley Nyhus, Elle Ebeling, Sam Ludwig and Matthew Takacs showing their stuff in the Green Fleet against 37 other junior sailors.

X Championships……at Okoboji found four members of the CLYC X Fleet in attendance, with Riley Cooney (and crew Ava Ollenburg) and Billy Starbeck (and crew Easton Devries) in the 56 boat Junior Fleet………and Ana Starbeck (and crew Sophie Ollenburg) and Alex Starbeck (and crew Cameron Terry) in the 36 boat Senior Fleet

Interlakes Regatta…….also at Okoboji was dominated by the Clear Lake MC Fleet, who won the team trophy, with all 5 team members in the top 11 boats, and Mark Tesar at the top of the individual standings. Bill Nicholas also finished second overall in the C Fleet individual standings.

START REMINISCING ABOUT THIS SEASON’S BLOOPERS……it’s that time of year when you can reflect on dumb things you saw (or did) on or near Clear Lake (or on or near other lakes) this season. Stu Oltrogge is awaiting your nominations, which you can email to clyciowa@gmail.com so they can be presented at the Year End Banquet and voted on by the membership….and some lucky soul can decorate their home with the Blooper Award this winter.

Later, Oz
