September 2, 2020

Another exciting year of CLYC racing and enjoyment of our beloved lake is nearly in the books.  The championship winners in each fleet have earned their titles, previous winners have been dethroned and the banter of vengeance in 2021 has already begun!

Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves yet however!  This weekend brings two events; the Labor Day Regatta starts Saturday morning with MC and X fleets, Saturday afternoon for E fleet, I believe the C fleet is done for the year despite not being able to take the annual Canadian fishing trip!  Don’t forget about the always dreaded, never desired way to end each season…. The Juno Cup; each fleet has one for the unlucky sailor finishing last in the last race of the year.

The last party of the year, will start at 5:30 pm on Sunday with a catered dinner, for the cost of $10 per adult, $5 per child. Like previous events we will be outside under the tent to eat and partake in beverages of your choice, remember however, those beverages are beer/wine/soft drinks only, no hard liquor please.  The awards presentation will commence at 6:30 for those who have earned them and others who wish to attend, all are welcome!  In addition to the fleet awards, the Annual Awards will be bestowed upon their fortunate winners; the Tom MacNider Trophy, the R Lyle Berg Trophy, the Charlie Crane Trophy and the Loose Anchor Award.  These awards are the backbone of our Club, earning one is a high honor!  And the low honor; the Blooper Award… Mike and Lexa please let someone know if you need tools to take the trophy off your wall, perhaps a can of paint so the wall doesn’t look faded!?!?!

Last weekend Hobie Fleet 10 and District 7 hosted their annual points regatta.  It looked as though they had a good turnout given the pandemic, they certainly had good breeze for it, well at least on Sunday. I haven’t seen any results or gotten any reports, however, I heard in passing they had several youth sailors in attendance  who sailed very well!  That’s really exciting for all sailors!

Speaking of last weekend, did anyone else feel like they were sailing in Pewaukee, not Clear Lake?  Kudos to all the RC teams for setting good courses in such shifty breezes and those sailors who could figure it out and sail well!

The MCSA Masters Nationals is on!  As of last count 42 boats are preregistered with additional boats verbally committed.  At www.clyciowa.com as well as www.mcscow.org you can find a regatta packet put together by Hunter Callanan, to say she did a fantastic job would be an understatement.  Mike Starbeck is heading up the spectator fleet for the MC Regatta; this is one area in which we’re going to need a good amount of help, especially given our self-imposed social distancing guidelines.  Please contact Mike if you can help. It can be one day, the whole weekend, the use of your boat for another to drive, any help you can offer is great!  Mike Stabeck 319-290-9088

This event is especially important for several reasons; it’s the only major MC event to be held in 2020 since the COVID-19 Pandemic began, it’s a great way to bring people to Clear Lake and finally, the sailors are getting a preview for the 50th running of the MCSA Nationals to be held here next June!  If we do it right we could see an eclipse of our record setting year of 107 boats in the year 2000.

The Tri Clear Lake IS being run this year, September 5th to be exact. The committee needs a volunteer on a powerboat to observe swimmers on the elongated Olympic course, beginning at 7am on September 5th.  If you’re able, please contact Jake Kopriva at 641-231-1414

Some folks have equipment they would like to pass along or are looking to obtain, please see the following:

  • Dan Allen is looking for an Opti in good condition.  If you have one or know of one available, please contact him at dsallen@cltel.net
  • Several families from Lake Minnetonka are looking to purchase a used Laser or Laser parts.  If you have anything Laser related and are willing to part with it, send Ian Solum an email at solum.lmss@gmail.com

See you this weekend for awards!

Stay in the clear air,

Dan Allen
