The winds of November came early last weekend………out of the northwest and strong from Saturday afternoon all the way through Sunday. It did make for some good racing, although you had to keep on your toes. As far as I know Stu Oltrogge was the only one who tested the early summer water temps, when he fell out of his boat on the last leeward mark, nearly got run over by Mark Tesar, and let three of us pass him while he floundered around in the drink………sounds like an early nominee for the Blooper Award.

Saturday evening’s inaugural Yacht Club party of the season was a smashing success. Attaboys to the Social Members who brought so much food that we actually had leftovers (which is a first) and to the Compound who brought a keg that we actually emptied (also a first…or maybe a second).

SAILING SCHOOL………..has commenced. The Racer Group started on Monday, so you should be seeing more and more activity at the Club in the coming weeks.

WATCH THE RACES………is this weekend. If you want to learn about sailboat racing, meet at the Yacht Club at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, get on a spectator boat and watch the races together. On the boat will be someone who is knowledgeable about the sport of sailboat racing. He or she will explain the race course, the different classes of boats and other juicy details about racing. Should the race be cancelled or postponed, the captain of the spectator boat will decide whether or not to try it again at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 12. For more information, you can call Paula Hanus at 641-425-0817.

EARLY INTERLAKE REGATTA NOTICE…………..I know it’s really too early to be thinking seriously about the Interlake Regatta, which is at Lake Okoboji this year. But, if you’re marking your calendar, please note that the registration and racing schedule will be a bit different this year. Registration will take place on Thursday, August 4 in the afternoon. Races will be on Friday and Saturday, August 5-6.

AMERICA’S CUP…………the Louis Vitton America’s Cup World Series visits Chicago this weekend. Six teams will be racing off Navy Pier in 45 foot catamarans that are smaller versions of the 72 foot cats they sailed in the last America’s Cup. This is the first time any America’s Cup event has been held on freshwater. And you don’t have to travel to Chicago to see it……….just catch the NBC Sports Network at 4:00 on Saturday and at 3:30 on Sunday and you can watch from your couch. I watched the races they held off of Manhattan a few weeks ago, and it’s pretty crazy…….more fun than the actual America’s Cup, because it’s fleet racing.

PAT BERGO……..would like to make a request of the membership. She noticed that somehow we managed to include her cell phone number in the yearbook. Please ignore that number if you want to try to reach her………instead call her on the landline at 641-357-4623, and she will cheerfully pick up the phone.

Later, Oz
